Publisher's summary

After nearly 400 years of power without fear, Brein has found himself human again.

In this thrilling sequel to Among the Cattle, Brein must replace his vampiric strength and speed with wit, skill, and determination if he wants to survive the long fall from hunter to hunted.

But even though his otherworldly power is gone, that doesn’t mean the threat is any less dangerous. Now, Brein finds himself facing off against the vampires who were once his family—but he won’t be able to do it alone. Training day and night with Vince and Grace, vampire and human, Brein must hone his skills to take on the most fearsome foe he’s ever had to face: his klutch, his pseudo-father. Struggling with the loss of power and finding himself just like those he once hunted, Brein will face danger, loss, and challenges the likes of which he’s never faced before.

And at any moment, his terrible klutch, he who turned Brein into a vampire all those centuries ago, could be lurking around any corner. There is no way out. Whether he wants it or not, Brein must face his klutch in a ferocious battle to the death if he ever wants to be free. Will Brein and his allies survive the onslaught, or will they be cut down in the fray?

Only their determination and training stand between them and the grave in Among the Butchers.

Bad Decisions for the Vampire/Human

Brein is still making bad choices but at least he is recognizing that not all the choices are his to make. He must now train his best friend and human, Grace, and his recently sired Vampire underling, Vince to fight the heavily skilled Butcher family (Brein’s family). In his now human state, Brein struggles to stay alive, atone for Taylor, and try to keep his friends, Grace and Vince among the living. Pitting two novices against a family of skilled and highly trained vampires makes for an exciting story!

The author, John Murphy continues the story of Brein, Grace, and Vince in vivid detail and dialogue. Murphy keeps the suspense moving forward at a steady pace only to provide a great plot twist at the end! His vivid descriptions and dialogue provide an entertaining yet short listening experience. The character development is well done giving the listeners some deeper insight into Brein.

Once again, Brian T. Deal provides the narration in a clear, concise manner that is both entertaining and engaging. His delivery is smooth and flawless with the appropriate level of energy and enthusiasm.

The last book in this short series caught me off guard! The ending is a surprise!
