I wasn’t supposed to survive. The station has been hit. Everyone around me is dead. I have 11 hours of life support left and no way of contacting Earth. I’m alone. I’m stranded. I’m desperate. But I’m alive. The more of the station I explore, the surer I get that this was no accident. Someone did this, and I don't think they're finished yet.

Jon Ryan has some unfinished business. Since he caused the universe to reboot, well, he can't seem to find his wife of two billion years. That's one great big oops. He also can't find the massive time ship Aramthella and her human crew. Double oops. And then there's the matter of not knowing whey why there are several copies of key people in the new reality he must navigate. Triple oops. He actually knows one whole heck of a lot less about his current situation than seems healthy. But he's Jon Ryan, former fighter pilot turned android warrior for humankind.

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Noth, humanity's greatest threat, has awoken and he's out for blood. So is Cole and his merry crew of misfits. They have the means to get it, too. Sort of. Their weapon might not be fully functional, but it just needs a power boost. How hard can it be? Pretty freaking hard, as it turns out. Especially when their enemies will do anything to stop them. When someone close to the crew is murdered and Cole is framed for the deed, things only get more complicated. Under the circumstances, that problem should be put on the backburner, but nothing is ever as it seems.

Publisher's summary
They’re ancient. They’re hostile. They’re here.
The alien creatures have made it to Earth.
Entire cities are battling invasion from the menacing swarms.
This is worse than Zola. It’s worse than the Leak.
It’s worse than all of our nightmares put together.
The creatures are indestructible, shrugging off our strongest weaponry.
Now, our only hope lies inside a powerful ancient artifact we don’t understand.
To save Earth’s future, we have to unlock the secrets of a lost alien past.
Whatever it takes, we have to harness the power of the Orb.
Humanity is coming together for one last stand against this threat from afar.
The odds are against us, but we will never give up.
We will fight for our world. We will fight for our people.
All or nothing…. we will fight to the end.
More from the same

Story
The Majority always gets what it wants. Thomas Hill just wishes it didn't want him. There's no way to escape a galactic mob of mind readers, no way for him to blend in with his foster family and other average Americans. Because Thomas invented a way to save his own life. His custom medicine halts the progress of his degenerative neuromuscular disease. Newscasters proclaim him the next Einstein, but mere humans have no idea his bioengineered processing capacity rivals that of a supercomputer. They just think he's smart. However, there are other bioengineered supergeniuses in the Majority.

Hope
With all the current hoopla surrounding Three Body Problem, Craig Falconer offers us a much more optimistic picture of the universe. I loved it, pure and simple.

saved the worst for last
This book is a solid 80% adjectives and repetitive scene setting, using the same tropes over and over. When it came to plot advancement and character development, what could be said in 10 words was instead said in 30, and then repeated two other ways. It came across like a 9th grade English class submittal in which the student spent the vast majority of their efforts trying to reach an assigned word count.
