Publisher's summary
Considered by many to be unadaptable due to its length and complexity, Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic Dune has made it to the screen about every two decades. David Lynch was the first director to successfully make a film adaptation in 1984, but his version of Dune was heavily criticized for numerous reasons. John Harrison’s 2000 television miniseries Frank Herbert’s Dune was a success for the Sci-Fi Channel and won Emmys, yet has mostly been forgotten. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film Dune: Part One won Oscars but only adapted the first two-thirds of the book, leaving viewers waiting for the conclusion.
Each director expressed concern with staying faithful to the world’s bestselling science fiction book while attempting to bring to life its characters, settings, and story. But in the end, how faithful were they to Frank Herbert’s 1965 masterpiece?
Adaptations of Dune: Frank Herbert’s Story on Screen dives into this topic by analyzing each screen adaptation and its degree of faithfulness to Herbert’s book. Collecting information from a wide range of sources, Kara Kennedy provides thorough background information and context for each adaptation before exploring such wide-ranging topics as the story, script, setting, costuming, characters, and more. Through this process, she uncovers the changes made during adaptation and reveals how faithful each screen adaptation is to its source material.

Story
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

From age 11, in 1974, until she left the show, in 1981, Melissa Anderson literally grew up before the viewers of Little House on the Prairie. Melissa, as Mary, is remembered by many as the blind sister - and she was the only actor in the series to be nominated for an Emmy. In The Way I See It, she takes listeners onto the set and inside the world of the iconic series created by Michael Landon, who, Melissa discovered, was not perfect, as much as he tried to be. In this memoir she also shares her memories of working with guest stars like Todd Bridges, Mariette Hartley, Sean Penn, Patricia Neal, and Johnny Cash.

Story
No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Center of the YOUniverse is an out-of-this-world spectacle starring Tituss Burgess and Jane Krakowski with music, laughter, and (probably) the salvation of humanity from its self-inflicted doom. Unaware of just how brightly the other one shines, Tituss and Jane will attempt the impossible: a double-booking. In a unique blend of song and storytelling, they’ll stop at nothing to upstage each other and steal the spotlight…until they realize the true purpose of being ridiculously attractive and having immeasureble talent: to unite and heal the world.

The Dune primer we have been waiting for!!!
Coming at the perhaps the perfect moment for fans of the Dune universe, when the “sleeper” that was their collective fandom was solidly awakened with the advent of Denis Villeneuve’s epic installment of Dune:Part 1, and only weeks before the release of Dune: Part 2, the Dune Scholar herself Dr. Kara Kennedy has penned a must-have that all Dune fans should definitely add to their libraries.
Using extremely accessible prose, Kennedy seamlessly describes for each of the three film and/or tv versions of Dune their respective production histories, and provides excellent insightful comparisons and contrasts between their representations of Frank Herberts sprawling masterpiece and the original source material itself.
Particularly in the case of John Harrison’s 2000 Sci-Fi channel mini-series, Kennedy gives us, for what appears to be the very first time, a real in-depth insider look at the complex and intricate steps taken to create the controversial cult classic. A delightful read from start to finish, one can come back and discover something new with each return visit. The only question now is how soon can we expect the sequel!!
