シェイクスピア最初期の作品で、「三一致の法則」(時・場・話)を最終作「テンペスト」とともに守っている笑劇。元ネタは古代ローマの新喜劇『メナエクムス兄弟』で、双子の取り違え劇としてドタバタ調のお話。
「銭に関して騙し欺されどつきどつかれ色々あって結局一件落着」というコメディなので、いわゆる現代の「吉本新喜劇」などのノリにかなり近いのが特徴。
「間違い」とは、ひとつは伝統的な「人違い」の話ですが、それでいて「取引」の間違い(合わない勘定)でもあります。上演当時はインフレで、お金の取引が切実な社会問題でした。
また、裏のテーマとして、舞台となる地名にもある通り、聖書「エペソ人への手紙」にあるような夫婦・主従の義務や関係です。宗教的な「間違い」でもあるということで、初期はクリスマスシーズンの祝祭劇としても上演され、最後の修道院長の台詞にもこうした含意があります。

数奇なる人生を語り終えるイージオン。大公は、愛する息子のため危険を顧みなかったこの哀れな男に情けをかけ、いわく法に背きさえしなければ、喜んで無罪放免にしてやりたいところだが、むやみに法を曲げて我が誓いと誉れを汚すことはできぬ。とはいえ、法が厳格に定めし即時処刑は忍びないから、今日一日で物乞いをするなり金を借りるなりして、保釈金を集めること叶うか試してみよとのお達しだが・・・。
双子のドタバタ取り違い劇。「銭に関して騙し欺されどつきどつかれ色々あって結局一件落着」というコメディの原点ここにあり。
