庄造は、現在の妻である福子と、雌猫のリリーと一緒に暮らしている。
そこへある日、庄造の前妻である品子から福子宛てに、かつて自分も共に暮らしていたリリーを譲ってほしいという手紙が届く。
福子は、庄造のリリーに対する溺愛ぶりに嫉妬していたこともあり、品子に譲ることを勧めるが、渋る庄造。
夫婦喧嘩の末、結局は譲ることに同意した庄造は、以前にも他所へ譲られたことのあるリリーが自力で戻ってきたことがあり、それを期待していた。
一方、品子の元に到着したリリーは始めは懐かずにいたが、次第に品子に心を許し、品子の方でもすっかりその可愛さに情が移ってしまっていたのだった。
そんな中、リリーにひと目会いたいと、品子の家に向かう庄造……
猫好きには多分に共感できる描写が谷崎流に表現された本作は、猫に振り回される人間模様が諷刺的に描かれている。
谷崎潤一郎
1886年(明治19年)東京日本橋で生まれる。家業が傾き、住み込みで書生となり家庭教師をしながら学業に専念。1908年に東京帝国大学国文科に入学。1910年大貫晶川、小泉鉄らと第2次『新思潮』を創刊、『誕生』や『刺青』などを発表。1911年授業料未納のため退学。1915年 石川千代と結婚、1930年離婚。関東大震災後は関西へ移住し『吉野葛』『春琴抄』を発表。
1931年 古川丁未子と結婚、1934年離婚。1935年森田松子と結婚。1959年 右手に麻痺症状が出て、口述筆記にり執筆。1965年79歳で死去。
