現在48歳の坪倉優介は、今から30年前、大阪芸術大学1年生のときに交通事故に遭い、
記憶だけでなく、食べる、眠る、トイレなど、生きていくのに必要な能力を失い、お金や漢字まで忘れてしまう。
それはまるで、18歳の赤ちゃんと同じだった。
目の前に出されたお米は、「きらきら光る、つぶつぶ」としか思えなかった坪倉には、世界はどのように見えたのか……。
目の前に立つ「オカアサン」という女性のことを、
どのような経験を積み重ねながら、心から本当の「お母さん」と呼べるようになったのか……。
やがて大学を卒業して、京都の染工房に就職。
草木染職人として修業を積んだあと2005年に独立、「優介工房」を設立。
桜、笹、どんぐりなどを刻み、染料にして染めていく作品が、人気を呼ぶ。
100パーセント草木だけで染める制作方法は珍しく、出来上がった着物は「坪倉カラー」と呼ばれるようになる。
今までに日本全国で200回以上の展示会を行った。
現在も、草木染め職人として活躍するかたわら、
小学校などで講演会を開いて、生命の大切さについて語る。
坪倉の再生の過程を、本人が綴るエッセイだけでなく、
献身的に見守りつづけた母親の証言でたどる感動の手記。
