<あらすじ>
七千二百石の旗本の三男で末っ子の小出平五は、二十四歳の年になっても養子にも行かず、一族の者から「末っ子だから甘ったれ」「うわっ調子で、侍らしくない。旗本の子であるという自覚が無い」などと言われて育った。
彼は七歳のときから、饅頭など貰ったお菓子を用心や侍長屋の子持ちに売ってはお金を稼ぎ、十三、四歳になると、骨董好きの父親が自分の眼ちがいを隠すために戸納の中に放り込んだものを抜いては、清鑑堂という道具屋に持って行くようになった。そうして、御家人の株を買うためにせっせとお金を貯め込んでいたのだ。そんな平五の道具屋としての目利きの才能を見込んだ清鑑堂の清兵衛は、「いっそ大小を捨てて裏の細江さんのお嬢さんを貰って、道具屋を始めたらどうです」と常々言っていた。
そんなある日、叔父の面目を立てるため、また骨董道楽である父親・玄蕃や親戚をギャフンと言わせてやろうとある企みを思いついた平五は、偽物の刀を用意するために清兵衛のところに行き、焼身の短刀を見つけるが、それは平五が密かに思いを寄せる貧窮した武家である細江家の娘・みのが売りに出した物で……。
