<あらすじ>
成信は物音に反応し、枕元の刀に手を伸ばした。
何者かが屋敷に忍び込んだのだ。だが、忍び込むというよりは、躓いてよろけては何かを踏み抜くような激しい音をさせたりで、存在を隠せていない。成信は相手のうろたえた顔を想像して苦笑いした。
やがて寝所に小柄な男がやって来た。これは盗人かもと、ついおかしくなって成信は思わずくすくす笑い出した。成信が起きているのに気付いた男は「金を出せ」と脅すが、当の成信はのらりくらりとかわし、遂には「好きに家探しをしろ」と言い放つ。
そこを動くなと脅迫して家探しを始めた男だったが、あまりにぼろぼろの家に悪戦苦闘し、しまいにはどこかへ落ち込んでしまう。
その屋敷には金品どころか食べものすらろくにありはしなかったのだ。成信も三日は食べていないという。あきれ果てた男は、その翌朝膳ごしらえをして飯を振る舞った。そして、盗みに入ったはずがこのままでは飢え死にしかねない成信の身を案じるのであった。
<山本周五郎(やまもと・しゅうごろう)>
1903~67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
