After all, we are all human. In Understanding the Dark Side of Human Nature, Professor Daniel Breyer takes us on a fascinating philosophical journey into many of the deepest and darkest questions that have engaged humanity for millennia.

Now, thanks to the exciting new field of neuroscience, we can chart the workings of the brain and the rest of the nervous system in remarkable detail to explain how neurons, synapses, neurotransmitters, and other biological processes produce all the experiences of everyday life, in every stage of life.

Resumen del Editor
Conventional wisdom suggests there is a sharp distinction between emotion and reason. Emotions are seen as inferior, disruptive, primitive, and even bestial forces. These 24 remarkable lectures suggest otherwise-that emotions have intelligence and provide personal strategies that are vitally important to our everyday lives of perceiving, evaluating, appraising, understanding, and acting in the world.
Take a tour of Professor Solomon's more than three-decade-long intellectual struggle to reach an understanding of emotions, which he argues are, "the key to the meaning of life." A distinguished philosopher himself, Professor Solomon's lectures unfold as a rich dialogue with other philosophers, including Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Adam Smith, Nietzsche, William James, Freud, Heidegger, and Sartre.
In your exploration, you'll address such questions as: how do we distinguish emotions from feelings, such as heartache? What is the meaning of our emotions, and how do they serve to enrich and guide our lives? Are there a determinable number of basic emotions that serve as building blocks for the range of emotions we experience? Is an emotion such as jealousy a genetic trait shared by all humans - or is it something learned? As you listen to these lectures, prepare to think: Think about your own emotions; think about what you observe in others; think about the enormous body of research and conjecture on this fascinating topic as Professor Solomon takes you on a challenging and stimulating journey. The more we puzzle over the nature of emotions, the deeper the mystery becomes. It is a mystery that is by no means solved, but one that repays in careful, philosophical analysis.

It has inspired people from John F Kennedy to The Beatles and became the '60s Bible of counterculture – all because of the timeless truths it shared. Each poem takes a different theme – pleasure, beauty, freedom, joy and sorrow – as the fictional Al Mustapha shares his thoughts and experiences as he prepares to travel back to his island home.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

6-stars lecture
After listening to two other Great Courses by Robert C. Solomon, I had to get this, and I was not disappointed.

Unique
Was exactly what i was hoping for. I think his theory on emotions hits the nail on the head, and lets you see the world in a much better way.
Can be slow at parts, but ... Its a philosophy recording...

Useful but sometimes disorganized information
PROS: A lot of interesting information about why emotions exist, what function they serve, and how they can give us insights as well as lead us horribly astray. It also touches on emotions outside of 21st century Western culture (some cultures have "palettes" of emotions that are completely different from ours).
CONS: It's a bit disjointed and disorganized at times. Some parts of the course almost seem like a "free association" on a certain topic. Also, the main ideas of some chapters are unclear - I found myself sometimes asking, "Great, but what am I supposed to do with this information? How does this help me understand the emotions of myself and others?"
I'd still recommend it if you're pondering what emotions are, how they can go wrong, and how we can learn to refine, restrain, or release our emotions for a better life.

Great lectures, prob not my fave of Prof Solomon
I have greatly enjoyed and appreciated all of Prof. Solomon's lectures. This is probably my least favorite. His erudite explanations and wonderful speaking style are ever present. I think I didn't find the subject matter as compelling as his other lectures. So I would start with another set of lectures if this is your first exposure.

Emotions are signals/engagements with the world
Really nice overview of “emotions as signals” theory. The main thesis is that our emotions are engagements with the world and they are important for making decisions in it. They are also, to a large extent, defined by culture and the author gives several examples including the utka Inuits who do not display anger because they believe it is childlike. This is a good book as an introduction to these ideas; I’m hoping to find one that discusses more research
