Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

A predecessor to such monumental works such as Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Notes From Underground represents a turning point in Dostoyevsky's writing towards the more political side.
In this work, we follow the unnamed narrator of the story, who, disillusioned by the oppression and corruption of the society in which he lives, withdraws from that society into the underground.

The influence of Plato, his Dialogues and his ‘Academy', cast a long shadow. Around 35 Dialogues, almost all featuring Socrates as the principal figure, are generally ascribed to Plato and form one of the most important threads in Western philosophy. These four Dialogues may fall into the ‘Attributed Texts' category, but they are of sufficient interest to warrant study in our time and when set against the principal canon.

Historia
The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

Historia
The Brothers Karamazov is a murder mystery, a courtroom drama, and an exploration of erotic rivalry in a series of triangular love affairs involving the “wicked and sentimental” Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov and his three sons—the impulsive and sensual Dmitri; the coldly rational Ivan; and the healthy, red-cheeked young novice Alyosha. Through the gripping events of their story, Dostoevsky portrays the whole of Russian life, is social and spiritual striving, in what was both the golden age and a tragic turning point in Russian culture.

Inspired by the true story of a political murder that horrified Russians in 1869, Dostoevsky conceived of Demons as a "novel-pamphlet" in which he would say everything about the plague of materialist ideology that he saw infecting his native land. What emerged was a prophetic and ferociously funny masterpiece of ideology and murder in pre-revolutionary Russia.

Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. Also known as Demons, The Possessed is a powerful socio-political novel about revolutionary ideas and the radicals behind them. It follows the career of Pyotr Stepanovich Verkhovensky, a political terrorist who leads a group of nihilists on a demonic quest for societal breakdown. They are consumed by their desires and ideals, and have surrendered themselves fully to the darkness of their "demons".

A Crucial Human Journey
Notes from the Underground, Crime and Punishment, and The Brothers Karamazov are three books everyone needs to read, or hear. The first two are, as the saying goes, unputdownable. Notes will make you cringe at the Underground Man's egotism and contradictory nature, which lead to the greatest depictions of sheer embarrassment, weird and funny and sad, that a pen ever put to paper. The recognition-craving U.M.'s relegation to Audience of One is his loss and our gain. The essential portrayal of neurosis and the universal aloneness of being. Crime and Punishment is a hallucinatory haunted house in which a poverty-stricken young intellectual discovers, after committing murder, that thought and feeling are two very different things. Not even Edgar Allan Poe explored the human conscience so masterfully. The book will make you a nervous wreck as its antihero becomes justifiably paranoid and is pursued by his own feelings of guilt every way he turns. Then a surreal Columbo enters the picture. These masterpieces are beautifully performed along with the rest of Dostoyevsky's immortal oeuvre in this colossal audiobook that will seem to have a beating heart and a conflicted brain to anyone who gets it. The crown jewel of anyone's library. Go on this human adventure. (One problem - needs chapter titles!)

One of the best things Audible has done
I came in skeptical, after experiencing some too good to be true collections that fell far short of the mark. This huge collection contains every work I know of by the author and even some very rare works. The narrations are consistent and professional especially considering the large number of Russian proper nouns. There is almost no missing content in the books like most large collections. The author is truly one of the greats and has a style that is engaging to modern readers. I found more than a few Stephen King influences throughout the collection.
