Historia
The NFL has come a long way from its founding in Canton, Ohio, in 1920. In the 100 years since that fateful day, football has become America’s most popular and lucrative professional sport. The former scrappy upstart league that struggled to stay afloat has survived a host of challenges to produce American icons like Vince Lombardi, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady. It is an extraordinary and entertaining history that could be told only by Joe Horrigan, former executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and perhaps the greatest living historian of the NFL.

Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays’s catch, Babe Ruth’s called shot, and Kirk Gibson’s limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective.

In Gotham, Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace have produced a monumental work of history, one that ranges from the Indian tribes that settled in and around the island of Manna-hata, to the consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York in 1898. It is an epic narrative, a story as vast and as varied as the city it chronicles, and it underscores that the history of New York is the story of our nation. The events and people who crowd this audiobook guarantee that this is no mere local history. It is in fact a portrait of the heart and soul of America....

This is a story about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a story by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is the story about what happened to the team when their glory days were behind them.

Resumen del Editor
A captivating blend of reportage and memoir exploring the history of the Chicago Cubs
For Rich Cohen and millions of other fans, the Chicago Cubs have always been more than a team: they've been the protagonists of a King Arthur epic, in search of the Holy Grail that is winning the World Series. A chronicle of the last few miraculous seasons as experienced through the prism of Cubs history, The Chicago Cubs tracks the famous curse, which was placed on the team in 1945 by the infamous owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, who was ejected from Wrigley Field when he tried to bring his goat into the grandstand for the fifth game of the World Series. He vowed the team would never get back to the championship. And they haven't - until now.
Cohen follows the Cubs' early days as the first powerhouse baseball team, winners of the 1907 and 1908 World Series; their storied players, such as Billy Sunday, the second baseman who became the most popular preacher in America; their old stadiums; their owners, from chewing gum magnate William Wrigley to Thomas Ricketts, CEO of Ameritrade; and their time between the two World Wars; all of it leading up to the momentous last World Series appearance and the breaking of the famed curse.
A captivating blend of reportage and memoir, drawing on Cohen's extensive interviews and travels with recent Cubs players, owners, and coaching staff, The Chicago Cubs is a portrait not only of a team, but also of a city, of a game, and of what it means to be a perpetually disappointed fan who is finally rewarded.

Historia
From the beginning, ’68 was a season rocked by national tragedy and sweeping change. Opening Day was postponed and later played in the shadow of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s funeral. That summer, as the pennant races were heating up, the assassination of Robert Kennedy was later followed by rioting at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. But even as tensions boiled over and violence spilled into the streets, something remarkable was happening in major league ballparks across the country. Pitchers were dominating like never before, and with records falling and shut-outs mounting, many began hailing ’68 as “The Year of the Pitcher".

The World Series is the most enduring showcase in American team sports. It’s the place where legends are made, where celebration and devastation can hinge on a fly ball off a foul pole or a grounder beneath a first baseman’s glove. And there’s no one better to bring this rich history to life than New York Times national baseball columnist Tyler Kepner, whose bestselling book about pitching, K, was lauded as “Michelangelo explaining the brush strokes on the Sistine Chapel” by Newsday.

Mike Piazza was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 baseball draft as a "courtesy pick". The Dodgers never expected him to play for them - or anyone else. Mike had other ideas. Overcoming his detractors, he became the National League Rookie of the Year in 1993, broke the record for season batting average by a catcher, holds the record for career home runs at his position, and was selected as an All Star 12 times. Mike was groomed for baseball success by his ambitious, self-made father in Pennsylvania, a classic father-son American-dream story.

Pete Rose played baseball with a singular and headfirst abandon that endeared him to fans and peers, even as it riled others--a figure at once magnetic, beloved and polarizing. Rose has more base hits than anyone in history, yet he is not in the Hall of Fame. Twenty-five years ago he was banished from baseball for gambling, then ruled ineligible for Cooperstown; today, the question "Does Pete Rose belong in the Hall of Fame?" has evolved into perhaps the most provocative in sports, a layered, slippery and ever-relevant moral conundrum.

If you love the Cubs, you will love this book
I am a die hard Cubs fan. This book gave a history of the cubs, telling many stories that I had not heard before. The book brought the stories to life. I have recommended this to many of my friends- all Cubs fans. This is the first audible book that I listened to. The performance was top notch. Go Cubs!

What an incredible, incredible book!
This book turned out to be SO much better than I could have hoped. I've been listening to (and reading) baseball books for a long time now, and this one is immediately going on the Top Shelf. I ordered the actual book as well, just because I want to be able to pick it up and revisit favorite parts.
Learned so much about the history of the Cubs. And the writing is magnificent. One of the best baseball writers I've found. (And superb narration on Audible.)

Great read but narrator doesn't know baseball
The narrator mispronounces at least 5 names and multiple baseball terms. It's a great read but why on Earth would the editors or author not make the narrator go back and redo the passages where he botches names and terms? Power alley is not a difficult term but he screws it up. Moises Alou's last name suddenly has 3 syllables? It definitely hurt the otherwise great experience of listening.

108 years later...
What can be said when a team goes 108 years between World Series wins, that is one year for every stitch on a baseball or a very long time! Good for the cubs and good for Mr Cohen the author not only for a good book but for being able to cleanse his mental makeup before he like so many others passed on into immortality having never witnessed a cubs team winning just once!

Cubs fans can relate and maybe learn a little something too
The writing of this book is excellent. Cohen is a fan turned sports writer, living the dream so many of us have had when the dream of being on the field turned out to not be for us. But in this dream, he remains relatable to the rest of us, the people who hope to someday have a press credential or sit down with Theo Epstein and figure out what makes the man tick. He teaches Cub history, baseball history, American history. And he nails the emotional state of so many Cubs fans throughout our lives, up to and including the near mythical world series of 2016 and what it means to our world. Very well done.
The narration, while soothing and easy to listen to, was the only shortcoming of this book. It's nitpicky, I know, but when you mispronounce players names it really breaks the spell of believing I'm hearing an intimate portrayal of a die hard fan. Anybody who knew the Cubs in 2003 knows very well who Moises Alou is and how to pronounce his name. And when talking about Bartman, it's a name that comes up frequently. So hearing it wrong just really kills the vibe. There were a couple other things like that where the narrator didn't read with the true voice of the author or any other actual Cubs fan in mind. Inflection when talking about the L, connotation of the feeling that happens in the 8th inning, etc. He has an excellent voice, but was clearly not familiar with the subject matter.
