Resumen del Editor

This compelling series combines action and historical drama in fascinating tales of an American Tory who stumbles into the dark world of the vampire. Completely revised and expanded, each of these new editions includes more than 40 pages of new material. In this introduction to the series, young Jonathan Barrett arrives in London in 1773 to pursue his college education. His fate among the undead is sealed by the unnaturally beautiful Nora Jones, who seduces him and consumes his blood. Unbeknownst to Jonathan, he is no longer the same man, something he soon discovers upon his return to America to join the armed forces and defend his country. Rather than an appetite for traditional fare, he has developed a strange craving for human blood.

An exceptional piece of prose and well told story.

Where does Red Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is definitely in the top 15% (I listen to a lot of books)

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well that's an interesting question! Elrod does such an exceptional job of writing that all the characters have depth and interest. Of course the protagonist leads the narrative, so we get the fullest character development -- but not at the expense of the other characters or story line.

Have you listened to any of Frazer Douglas’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not that I remember. He does a very good job with excellent character separation and individuality portrayed in his narration.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are many telling part in the narrative, but his death scene is done very well.

Any additional comments?

This is a masterful piece of fiction so well written and plotted to make it a great pleasure to listen to. Don't expect to jump into the action on the second page, but rather expected a beautifully crafted story telling that brings thing to fruition by the story's logic.

Good vampire

Tired of vampire with conscious and making them out to be good . Makes reading boring and tiresome. Real shame because he is a good writer.

An excellent twist on vampire lore, and an great period piece!

Pat Elrod's "Vampire Files" series introduced this version of the vampire mythos, and Johnathan Barrett is a worthy successor. The setting, the American Revolution but from a Loyalist perspective, is unusual enough to be fascinating, and seems well-researched.

This book is quite clearly the first in a series, with an ending that leaves quite a bit hanging for the next book, but I don't see this as a flaw, as long as you know that going in. Like many first parts, this one spends a fair bit of time establishing the setting and then the rules of this universe, but it's done in an engaging manner, as Johnathan has to figure things out in his own with very little to go on.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable book that leaves me wanting to start on the next one right away!

Decent premise but needs greater depth

I'm hoping the story gets deeper from here. The characters are sketched but need development. Maybe that's what's in the next book.
