Resumen del Editor

Cole Balek is a liar.

Okay, not really. He just makes you think he’s sawing someone in half or that he’s trapped in a trunk. All Cole wants is to continue the love of magic that he and his late father shared by becoming the best tween magician in the Las Vegas area.

But when Cole and his mother get a mysterious note from a rare book collector, he’s forced to search among his father’s belongings for A Lesson in Magick, an old book of spells connected to an ancient group of magickers. What he finds instead are a series of coded clues his dad left for him - clues that send Cole and his best friends Ethan and Sanchez on a wild scavenger hunt throughout Las Vegas, in search of A Lesson in Magick. Cole must use every hack and magic trick he’s got, because he knows that if the book falls into the wrong hands, disaster will strike.

As danger mounts, who can this clever, funny, and determined group of friends really trust in a world filled with professional magicians, strange professors, and scary Elvis impersonators?

Classy, fun adventure w/o smut

This was a lot of fun. I loved the intellectual and adventurous tone. The story is mainly about three friends, 2 male, 1 female who solve a mystery and evade numerous villains including "Smellvis". Take note Audible, this proves you dont need the extreme smut & alternative sexual scenes for an interesting story that is engaging for all ages. For example, there is a part about Dolly Parton impersonators who are described with big blonde hair and glitter rather than other body parts kids dont need to focus on. I also like there is a family focus, the bonds are obvious, poignant but not sappy. Much appreciated, bravo!

An epic scavenger hunt across Las Vegas

Cole and his mother are living in Las Vegas, trying to make it through life and heal from the death of his father. One day, Cole's mother gets a letter from a rare bookseller who is interested in a book that his father owned. When Cole begins going through his father's things to find the book, he doesn't find the book. What he finds instead is a clue. This clue starts Cole and his friends on a scavenger hunt that has them traveling back and forth across the city of Las Vegas in the hopes of finding where his father hid the book.

Unfortunately, the scavenger hunt is not without its dangers. Very quickly, Cole notices that he's being followed, and an early run-in with several Elvis impersonators shakes up Cole and impresses upon him the true level of danger involved in this hunt. Not only that, but with everything happening, Cole is having trouble figuring out who he can trust.

This was such a fun listen! The clues that Cole was following really illustrated the depth of relationship he had with his father and how much fun they had working on illusions to perform. The number of misdirections had my poor brain spinning at times, but it was still really fun to listen to Cole work through all the clues. If you like mysteries or scavenger hunts, I definitely encourage you to listen to this audiobook.

Elvis and Dolly's

Love the concept that Las Vegas is the magic capital of the US - I think I hit my forehead with a "doh" because why didn't I think of that before!! It's like the baby cousin of Hogwarts but no witches or warlocks. And underneath the mystery and comical friends (they may grow up to be in "The Hangover" yet...) there are heartwarming father-son moments. I will never look at Elvis impersonators the same way again, giggle!!

I forgot that Josh Gad was the celebrity narrator - kudos on his delivery.

The incredible Josh Gad!

I was unfamiliar with this author, but when I saw Josh Gad narrated it (Olaf from Frozen and LeFou from Beauty and the Beast), I knew I had to try it. Plus, I like teen dramas. Not only is this a very engaging story, but Josh did such a great job narrating it, I had to check to see if there was a co-narrator. Nope, he does all the voices! I will for sure buy the next book if the author writes a follow up!

Very Entertaining

The title caught my attention and I've never really listened to books like this but it was really good. A bit funny and mysterious. I finished it in 2 days. That's a new one for me but it kept me intrigued.

Olaf narrating a book about magic- great for teens

I am a mom of two pre-teen (9,12) and a teenager(15). This book is fun and engaging and the narration is fabulous. It makes me want to take a trip to Las Vegas and go to some magicians shows or just explore the strip with my kids. Clean good fun.

Totally Unexpected

I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did! It’s a middle grade mystery focused on magician acts and tricks. The book was decently paced and had quite a bit of action that helped me stay engaged.

The Writing: The writing was very well developed for being a middle grade book. Perhaps I don’t understand the scope or limitations of what middle grade writing is but I was thoroughly engaged and had bought into the story by the second or third chapter.

The Story: The story was pretty neat and had a few twists and turns that I actually had to pay attention to in order to continuously understand what was happening. Sometimes I had to rewind and re-listen in order to figure out what was going on. I also like how the author left all of the juicy bits towards the end. I did not know potential murder could be included in middle grade books.

Narrator: The narrator for this book was freaking Olaf from Frozen. I just about died when I heard his voice because it’s a unique and absolutely recognizable voice. He definitely gave the story an edge that I don’t know I would have found in it had he not been the narrator. Great story, fantastic narrator and overall very good writing.

Good, needs a little improvement

It was pretty good. I had a herd time telling the difference between two of the main character voices. The story seems to be more for a younger audience, teen or so.
