Resumen del Editor

Comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory's million-copy-plus best-selling memoir - now in audio for the first time, and featuring an all-new exclusive foreword written and performed by Dr. Christian Gregory, son of Dick Gregory, in which he shares why that word still carries so much weight and why his father's message of activism still endures.

"Powerful and ugly and beautiful...a moving story of a man who deeply wants a world without malice and hate and is doing something about it." (The New York Times)

Fifty-five years ago, in 1964, an incredibly honest and revealing memoir by one of the America's best-loved comedians and activists, Dick Gregory, was published. With a shocking title and breathtaking writing, Dick Gregory defined a genre and changed the way race was discussed in America.

Telling stories that range from his hardscrabble childhood in St. Louis to his pioneering early days as a comedian to his indefatigable activism alongside Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gregory's memoir riveted readers in the '60s. In the years and decades to come, the stories and lessons became more relevant than ever, and the book attained the status of a classic. The memoir has sold over a million copies and become core text about race relations and civil rights, continuing to inspire readers everywhere with Dick Gregory's incredible story about triumphing over racism and poverty to become an American legend.

Awesome Audiobook and Narrator!

Great autobiography, always wanted to read Nigger. I work on the road so being able to get this in an audio book was much better. The Narrator was awesome... I felt I was there!

Learning the truth about our struggle.

This book was truly eye opening, having been born in 1961 and living in a run down house in Florida my success has made me forget the hard working conditions, the struggle of my mother who could not have survived if not for my grand parents and uncles. It touched my heart when this kid with nothing was so giving and loyal to his mother. This is a work of art and has inspired me to read more autobiographies of great leaders and look past the lies panted about many of the so called great white men who were little more than hateful monsters.

Genius and Relavant

My pleasure. Simply, listen, learn and enjoy. His body of work is often overlooked by scholars, and academia types - - - even some Black intellectuals, but it shouldn't be.

Insightful and righteously uncomfortable

loved the honesty of this book. He is not just talking about his climb to the top as a great comedian but yhe struggles of evryday African Americans in the land of the free. I never of Dick Gregory having grown up in the 60s and 70s but never realize the true essence of his courage as a human being. If you want know about a great American, read this book.

Since I was a teenager

I first read this book when I was around 16 and I didn’t fully understand it and I drifted in and out of the book into my own thoughts. But now that I am 32 I understand the pain, climb and since of achievement. I love this book

Don’t be put off by the title…

This is an excellent book in every way! Dick Gregory was an athlete as a young adult, a comedian/entertainer, and a civil rights activist. He overcame extreme poverty and many other challenges. I loved everything about this book!!! Even though Mr. Gregory is deceased, his words and teachings in this book can still educate people today. Read it!!

Outstanding & a MUST-READ for every American!

Everyone needs to know Dick Gregory from his own words. An outstanding book, it's very well-written and cleverly laid out. You' won't want to put it down! Additionally, the audiobook is is exceptional. The narrator is perfect for this story. Absolutely perfect. He's given honor not only to the man himself but also to the man's story. This should be required reading in every middle and high school in the United States!! Better yet, you can't register to vote until you've read it!! 💗

Civil and the journey

What a great narrative with a great story. Did not know that much about the Gregory but through this book, I learned a lot about him may not like him at moments, but actually understand him and the struggles he went through. Can I say he was a family man I don’t know, but I could say he lived the struggle and that is all a great asset in his life.
