Historia
In the mid-1870s, a violent spray of comets hits Earth, decimating cities, erasing shorelines, and changing the world's climate forever. And just as Earth's temperature dropped, so was civilization frozen in time. Instead of advancing technologically, humanity had to piece itself back together.... In the 21st century, boats still run on steam, messages arrive by telegraph, and the British Empire, with its capital now in Delhi, controls much of the world.

The mainland has become a wilderness of unbroken forest, where tools of bronze and stone litter the beaches, and primitive natives scatter in terror.

There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other, and at the Navy, with nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight.

In this alternate history of the American frontier and the Jacksonian era, a small change takes place in the Battle of the Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. What results is a cascade of new developments that becomes an avalanche. In our world, Ensign Sam Houston, just turned 21, led the charge on the creek barricade in that battle and almost died from a terrible wound that took him a year to recover from. In this world, his wound is minor, so he is able to continue fighting the British—and develop his close relationship with Andrew Jackson much sooner.

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the '60s into one enduring archetype.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Historia
In 1914, they called it The Great War, and few could imagine anything worse. For nearly three decades, a peace forged in blood and fatigue has held sway in North America. Now, Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian Tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. But behind the façade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to go off. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse.

Long ago, homo nocturnus ruled the Earth, able to manipulate the forces of nature at their most basic level. Before the dawn of recorded history they were overthrown, leaving behind them only legends---our legends of shapeshifters and blood-drinkers, of cruel gods and evil magicians, of ogres and goblins, succubi and incubi.

Everyone with an interest in America's greatest battle comes up against its controversies. What if J. E. B. Stuart had arrived on the battlefield before the second day? What if Ewell had pressed hard on the heels of the Union rout on the first day? What if Pickett's charge had been stronger and better led? What if the Army of the Potomac had been commanded by a more aggressive counter attacker than Meade?

Historia
From the master of alternate history comes an epic of the second Civil War. It was an epoch of glory and success, of disaster and despair. 1881: A generation after the South won the Civil War, America writhed once more in the bloody throes of battle. Furious over the annexation of key Mexican territory, the United States declared total war against the Confederate States of America in 1881.

Alternative dystopian WWII history
S M Stirling’s Marching through Georgia is an alternative history tale with a dystopian orientation. A totalitarian slave owning society, the Draka, is established in South Africa and gradually takes over all of Africa. At the same time, they evolve to few themselves as a master race with aspirations to enslave the entire globe. Most of the story takes during WWII where the Soviet Union has been broken by Hitler. The US, fighting in two theaters, has a tough decision to ally themselves with the Draka to de-feat Hitler who is running roughshod over Europe. The action take place in Georgia (the country) with a crack unit of the unit facing overwhelming odds against superior German forces.
Stirling intersperses the action with generous helpings of backstory both historically dealing with the origins of the Draka as well as personally, dealing with the main characters. Each chapter leads with an excerpt from post-WWII publications, mainly history texts. In addition, there are discussions concerning the philosophical underpinnings of Draka psychology that add insight.
The narration is excellent with solid character distinction. Pacing is even and brisk.

Story line is good but . . .
The storyline is interesting unfortunately, the narrator performance is stilted, to the point of being boring. Overall, this book would be superb if read by someone with a range for character development and voice. All characters sound the same.

Not Stirling’s best but worthwhile
This is a tale that starts slows and builds. The lack of chapter headings or narrative section breaks make it a bit confusing for an audiobook. Probably not an issue for the written word. Does build but I found myself saying, “Get on with it!” Needs more editing.

I keep forgetting his books are slow
The author’s books are not bad, but the pacing is very slow. I read several books by this author a decade or more ago. I forgot that they were generally slow. The narrator definitely does not help. The pacing of the book is likely intentional, but it’s too slow for me.

Couldn’t Finish the Story
I could handle the whole “alternative history” bit, but trying to believe the plethora of advanced technology that the Drakar forces possessed was too much of a stretch. Butterfly bombs, claymore mines, automatic mortars, and shaped charges to name just a few. The author should have steered this story back into the reality what tech was actually available in the 1930-40s.

abysmal racist trash
Awful quality recording and disgusting p*rnographic descriptions of combat and the author's obvious fetishism for apartheid style government.
