Eddie Huang is the 30-year-old proprietor of Baohaus - the hot East Village hangout where foodies, stoners, and students come to stuff their faces with delicious Taiwanese street food late into the night - and one of the food world’s brightest and most controversial young stars. But before he created the perfect home for himself in a small patch of downtown New York, Eddie wandered the American wilderness looking for a place to call his own. Funny, raw, and moving, and told in an irrepressibly alive and original voice, Fresh Off the Boat recasts the immigrant’s story for the 21st century.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention. In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth.

And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Resumen del Editor
“Illuminating.”—The Washington Post * “Candid and relatable.”—Time *“Riveting and personal.”—Mindy Kaling * “Captivatingly immediate.”—The Skimm *
A “poignant, frank, and intimate” (The New York Times) memoir by actress Constance Wu about family, love, sex, shame, trauma, and how she found her voice.
Growing up in the friendly suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, Constance Wu was often scolded for having big feelings or strong reactions. “Good girls don’t make scenes,” people warned her. And while she spent most of her childhood suppressing her bold, emotional nature, she found an early outlet in community theater—it was the one place where big feelings were okay—were good, even. Acting became her refuge, and eventually her vocation. At eighteen she moved to New York, where she’d spend the next ten years of her life auditioning, waiting tables, and struggling to make rent before her two big breaks: the TV sitcom Fresh Off the Boat and the hit film Crazy Rich Asians.
Here Constance shares private memories of childhood, young love and heartbreak, sexual assault and harassment, and how she “made it” in Hollywood. Raw, relatable, and enthralling, Making a Scene is an intimate portrait of the pressures and pleasures of existing in today’s world.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"[Wu] candidly shares intimate details of her experiences of sexual assault and harassment and of her infamous tweet. She also sheds light on the pressures she’s faced and her mental health struggles. The result is poignant and relatable."—AudioFile Magazine

Growing up in foster care, Muir has lived in many houses. And if she's learned one thing, it is to Pack. Light. Carry only what fits in a suitcase. Toothbrush? Yes. Socks? Yes. Emotional attachment to friends? Foster families? A boyfriend? Nope! There's no room for any additional baggage. Muir has just one year left before she ages out of the system. One year before she's free. One year to avoid anything - or anyone - that could get in her way. Then she meets Francine. And Kira. And Sean. And everything changes.

Jasmine and Chelsea are best friends on a mission - they’re sick of the way women are treated even at their progressive NYC high school, so they decide to start a Women's Rights Club. They post their work online - poems, essays, videos of Chelsea performing her poetry, and Jasmine's response to the racial microaggressions she experiences - and soon go viral. But with such positive support, the club is also targeted by trolls. When things escalate, the principal shuts the club down. Not willing to be silenced, Jasmine and Chelsea will risk everything for their voices to be heard.

One of the funniest and most poignant books ever written about a mental illness, Agorafabulous! is a hilarious, raw, and unforgettable account of how a terrified young woman, literally trapped by her own imagination, evolved into a (relatively) high-functioning professional smartass. Down to earth and seriously funny, Benincasa's no-holds-barred revelations offer listeners the politically incorrect hilarity they heartily crave, yet is so often missing from your typical, weepy, and redemptive personal memoir.

Striking in their emotional immediacy, the stories in Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self are based in a world where inequality is reality but where the insecurities of adolescence and young adulthood, and the tensions within family and the community, are sometimes the biggest complicating forces in one's sense of identity and the choices one makes.

I Don't Care about Your Band posits that lately the worst guys to date are the ones who seem sensitive. It's the jerks in nice guy clothing, not the players in Ed Hardy, who break the hearts of modern girls.

You Can’t Be Serious is a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn’s idiosyncratic life. It’s about being the grandson of Gandhian freedom fighters, and the son of immigrant parents: people who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in the raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie Van Wilder…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country’s first Black president.

Historia
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

On paper, Sarah Levy’s life was on track. She was 28, living in New York City, working a great job, and socializing every weekend. But Sarah had a secret: her relationship with alcohol was becoming toxic. And only she could save herself. Drinking Games explores the role alcohol has in our formative years, and what it means to opt out of a culture completely enmeshed in drinking. It’s an examination of what our short-term choices about alcohol do to our long-term selves and how they challenge our ability to be vulnerable enough to discover what we really want in life.

When existential threats--from climate change and economic precariousness to the rise of an unnamed dictator and an epidemic of loneliness--begin to loom, she posts her way deeper into the portal's void.

What does “Give them Lala” mean? It means giving the truest, most honest version of yourself to the world. It means being authentic, bold, adventurous, and having an unapologetic approach to life. Hollywood is where Lauren Burningham, aspiring actress from Utah, fully embraced her alter-ego Lala Kent, entrepreneur, entertainer, and film and television star. Some say she’s rude; Lala says she claps back. Some say she’s too bold; Lala knows she’s reality TV gold. Truth is, without giving them Lala, Lauren could never have become the woman she is today.

Appreciate bravery in discussing sexual assault
Appreciate bravery in discussing sexual assault and particularly self blame as a bi-product of erroneous societal attitudes towards women that their body is not their own to make decisions with and they ought to accept abuse without complaint.

Great performance but structure is a little weird
I really enjoyed this but at times it is hard to follow. It’s a little challenging to tell when various scenes are happening in the timeline of Constance’s life. This makes the overall book harder to digest because you try to relate her actions to certain things that have happened without a clear picture of a sequence of events outside of the current anecdotal timelines she’s giving. This may be fine for some readers but it ultimately doesn’t work that well for me. Sometimes in memoirs authors do this and use past events as sort of flashbacks to inform a current timeline of events but I don’t know if it’s maybe because I listened to this in multiple sittings but I got lost a couple times. If I gave any advice as far as reading it would maybe be to have a book to reference as well or just listen in one sitting.
As far as the actual contents of the book, I think Constance has an excellent narrative voice that makes listening to her stories quite easy, and her perspective is quite moving. I think she makes great points about what it’s like to spiral in various ways and how a struggle with anxiety can go overlooked for so long without proper support or even just someone who can see that something serious is going on and that you need help. It’s scary to think how many people are out there so vulnerable and maybe a couple bad decisions away from collapse.

Poignant & Revealing
I admire the transparency of Constance Wu as she recounts her story. It was brave of her to detail her sexual assault and harassment. I admire her success and wish her well in her quest towards wholeness. My challenge in reading this is that the story construction seems a bit disjointed. I felt that parts of the ending chapters should have come first to better understand her journey.

Written with so much soul
I loved this book and how Constance doesn’t hold back any big truths or feelings. So much of it resonated. Beautifully written and read.

Couldn’t put it down
Read the book in a dY. It made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. I didn’t even know who this actress/author was before the book.

A book I’ll be coming back to
It’s rare for me to find a book that I see so much of my Chinese American identity in. I grew up with a mother who…wasn’t just a tiger mom…but more. Hearing Constance end this beautiful book with such a complex and nuanced description of her mother - and the lifetime of learnings she needed in order to see and appreciate the whole-ness of her - was something that moved me to tears. This book took me on a ride, not like ‘Wild Thing,’ but like ‘Mouse Trap.’ (Valley Fair references) I’ll be coming back to this book again as I raise Chinese American children in rural America.

Real truth and vulnerability. MUST READ!!!
I love this book. I feel bad that she went through this and not much supportive. How can some people be for the Me Too for all races, but when an example of it that then some people are against what she went through. It's a new Era of truth n vulnerability. Need to support each other through hard times. I'm so proud of her and I support of her courage.

Scenes made, mission accomplished Ms. Wu!
So many relatable moments and stories. I especially enjoyed the way the chapters were stand-alone scenes or snapshots from various stages in her life that felt like memories being shared that flowed out of chronological order, but never felt disconnected. Constance's narration is intimate and authentic, her storytelling prowess and grasp of literary devices evident throughout the memoir.

Heartwarming, Heartbreaking, Heartfelt
When I say I feel Constance put her whole heart into this book I don’t say that lightly. Her words were pristine and clean. There were moments I could hear the sadness in her voice, the bubbly excitement, the weighing frustration. I never got bored listening, I couldn’t stop, and that says a lot for this memoir (which usually put me to sleep). Listening to an author read her own book feels so much more impactful. Can’t recommend this enough!
