Resumen del Editor

Mary Higgins Clark takes you deep into the mysteries of the human mind where memories may be the most dangerous things of all.

Kay Lansing grew up in Englewood, New Jersey, daughter of the landscaper to the wealthy and powerful Carrington family. One day, accompanying her father to work, six-year-old Kay overhears a quarrel between a man and a woman that ends with the man's caustic response: "I heard that song before." That same evening, young Peter Carrington drives the 19-year-old daughter of neighbors home from a formal dinner dance at the Carrington estate, but she is not in her room the next morning and is never seen or heard from again.

Decades later, a cloud of suspicion hangs over Peter, not only for his neighbor's disappearance but also for the subsequent drowning death of his own pregnant wife in their swimming pool. But when Kay Lansing, now a librarian in Englewood, asks Peter's permission to hold a literary benefit cocktail party on his estate, she comes to see Peter as misunderstoodÅ and when he begins to court her, she falls in love -- and marries him. However, she soon makes a discovery that leads her to question her husband's innocence. She believes that the key to the truth lies in the identities of the man and woman whose quarrel she witnessed as a child. What she does not realize is that uncovering what lies behind these memories may cost Kay her life.

Great Book.

I really enjoyed this book. The story and characters were good and interesting. The narrator did an excellent job. This is the best book I have listened to in quite a while.

Grabs your interest

Keeps you interested throughout! MHC never lets her readers down. Her books are a welcome relief from the trash that is on television.

A bit contrived and poly anna

I liked the suspense of trying to figure out who did it, though, (spoiler alert) not a big OMG at the end. It was more like, blah, the author just had to name someone so she just randomly picked this person. Not all the loose ends were tied up and some questions went unanswered, so not well put together. It really rubbed me the wrong way having to listen to that high pitched voice of Kate standing by her man who she only knew for a few weeks before marrying. A bit far fetched. I liked the book despite all of these short comings. Worth a read.

Good read overall

The narration was well done and didn't distract from the story, which is always a plus. I don't think this was MHC at her best, though. The heroine was too simpering and the cast of suspects too obvious. However, it did keep my interest despite a couple of slower parts in the story.

Great book!

Have been a fan of Mary Higgins Clark for years. I generally like her older
books better, in some cases much better, but this is vintage Clark. Does not disappoint. Edge of your seat suspense and keeps you guessing pretty much all the way through.

Interesting idea but disjointed

I liked this story in concept and as always Jan Maxwell delivers an excellent reading. Solid production quality and hard work was put into this book.

There are a lot of good ideas in this book and an interesting setting of an old family mansion full of treasures from generations who have passed. Here are all these characters tied up into a decades old crime who each think they know who did but who could all be wrong. The main character has an interesting trajectory and connection to the story. The problem is the good idea struggles against a very disjointed narrative. Events seem to skip around and it is hard to see how much time has passed between events. Scenes like how the main character Kay falls in love with Peter and conversations between them that cover important plot points would have been a lot more interesting then being told in passing it happened. A critical scene where Peter travels to Kay's apartment to return a small item she had forgotten (the act being incredibly important later on) should have been shown. The entire story feels like it needed a lot more workshopping on why Mary Higgins Clark felt this was done, as it feels very rushed. I understand she wanted to get to the mystery but this needed more set up work

Shmeh...

The story was just ok. And although I am a big Mary Higgins Clark fan, I didn't buy her use of language. The narrator was stiff and formal largely because the writing was stiff and formal. There was no use of vernacular speak at all and I just don't find it believable that talk between friends or family or husband and wife will be prim and proper. This just grated on me throughout my whole listening experience.
This story definitely doesn't rank among her best work.
