Resumen del Editor

The discovery of Endurance briefly swept the anxiety and rancour of 2022 from the headlines of the world, and new generations thrilled again to one of the greatest tales of all time.

Acclaimed South African writer Darrel Bristow-Bovey has a deeply personal relationship with the story of Endurance and in this lyrical, loving journey into past and present, into humanity and the natural world, above and below the Antarctic ice, he revisits the famous story from a contemporary perspective, wondering why it seems to mean more today than ever before, and exploring our changing relationship with ourselves and the ice, and with our shared story of survival.

Drawing on literature, natural history, personal memoir and the thrilling epics of polar adventure, this is finally a celebration of the human spirit and the delivering powers of calculated optimism. If the story of Ernest Shackleton and Endurance tells us anything, it's that in the face of self-inflicted natural disaster, when there's no one to help us but ourselves, we can still pull off a miracle or two. From the bottom of the Weddell sea, Endurance still whispers that not all is lost, and not forever.

Beautifully written, will definitely be listening to this again

This book is just beautiful. I loved the lyriscm of Bristol-Bovey’s writing. It’s original in how he tells not only stories about the epic journey of the ship and the men aboard under took which is truly amazing but also his personal relationship to this story, which is mysterious, heart wrenching and curious. I know I will be reading this story again and again.

Sh His dedication to his men

I didn’t like the narrators way he delivered the story but I liked the story.

Re-inhabiting an incredible story of survival to answer a need to know how.

I can relate surprisingly well to Bristow-Bovey’s particular frame, but what’s useful is how he uses that particularity to answer the questions all of us have, about how and why to go on in a world that seems to be ending around us.

His answers are useful and unexpected, re-living an expedition that narrowly survived near-impossible hardship to understand death and how we understand those we lose; and Anthropocene life and how we go on in the face of what we might lose.

A brilliant book by a gifted writer.

My favourite writer by a mile. What a beautifully-written story. Such a gentle hand.
