Resumen del Editor

In the latest installment in his famous Detective Dave Robicheaux series, New York Times bestselling author James Lee Burke brings Dave’s partner and friend Clete Purcel to the forefront for the first time as Clete and Dave attempt to stop ruthless smugglers of a dangerous new drug.

Clete Purcel—private investigator, ex-member of the New Orleans Police Department, and war veteran with a hard shell and just a few soft spots—is Dave Robicheaux’s longtime friend and partner in detective work. But he has a troubled past. When Clete leaves his car at the local car wash, only to return to find it ransacked by a group of thugs tied to the drug trade from Mexican cartels to Louisiana, it feels personal—his grandniece died of a fentanyl overdose, and his fists curl when he thinks of the dealers who sold it.

Just as Clete starts to trail the culprits, Clara Bow, a woman with a dark past hires Clete as a detective to investigate her scheming, slippery ex-husband, and a string of brutal deaths all link back to a heavily tattooed man who seems to lurk around every corner. Clete is experiencing shockingly lifelike hallucinations and questioning Clara’s ulterior motives when he and Dave start to hear rumors of a dangerous substance with potentially catastrophic effects. The thugs who destroyed his car might have been pawns in a scheme far darker than they could’ve imagined.

Gripping, violent, yet interlaced with Clete’s humor and consistent drive to protect those he loves, Clete brings a fresh perspective to a truly iconic series. James Lee Burke proves yet again that he is the “heavyweight champ” and “great American novelist whose work, taken individually or as a whole, is unsurpassed” (Michael Connelly).

A stunning cultural and poetic book from an author who transcends the mystery/thriller genre into important literature.

Captures the extremes of human nature which we all struggle to understand. A unique work in this career long series.

Another home run

This Author combined with this storyline of characters and this narrator is as good as it gets. Full stop. Absolute home run.

Clete was always our favorite and this focus on him is just brilliant. Good job, fellas.

Will Patton IS Clete Purcell!!

Burke’s characters inhabit my dreams, and Will Patton’s personification of Robicheaux and Purcell have brought their world to life in my imagination. I simply cannot listen to anyone else: NO ONE is better than Patton!!!

The story

I loved that this one was told by Clete! Will Payton as always had the best voice for a story. My only complaint was it was too short. Thank you James Lee Burke! Job well done

Disappointment

The reader was great but the story wasn't. I was REALLY looking forward to the expansion of Clete's character and history, Long with Dave Robicheaux but this story jumped Round way too much and did not seem to have any focus. Guess I'm stuck with the Dave Robicheaux stories from years before.

Bioweapon, Joan of Arc, LSD and Kitchen Sink???

This novel has so many protagonists, so many talking dead (including Joan of Arc, wuh?), so many women rescued by Clete, so many noble quests, that it reads like a modern tale from King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. There is just one problem!

Clete is Dave. Yeah, it's Clete speaking, *but it's what Dave would say.* We do not hear Clete's unique thought processes. We expect Dave's normally the loyal sidekick (Clete), with his ready to rumble aphorisms, to expand on his generally very witty banter within his internal dialogue. Instead, we hear a background of Dave's voice in Clete's head (for which Burke even apologizes at least once).

And! Given the time frame of this novel (1990's), I am shocked that Burke focuses on fentanyl as a scourge drug in Louisiana within the storyline. Synthetic opioids (like fentanyl and methadone) were not even on the DEA's enforcement radar until the next decade. Heroin and semi-synthetic opioids were the real problem back then. This was very sloppy research on the part of the author and his staff. I suspect pushing hot buttons for some page-rage is red meat to hungry cop-thriller listeners...that's cool, I guess.

I will not place any spoilers here, but I have to say that the entire premise of Clete and Dave's plight (a bioweapon misplaced in Clete's car) lost any relevance beside all the drama, murder, exploitation, and Clete's LSD trip (a topic the author knows little about. Fact: LSD trips last 8 hours, not 30 minutes).

This book is a just confused mess...great prose and some good one-liners for sure, but I fear James Lee Burke has again *jumped the shark.* He has written a *hodgepodge* which would have been a more apt title for this book than *Clete.*

Skip this audiobook. Read instead about Dox, a character in Barry Eisler's novels. He's more Clete than this Clete.
