Historia
The Everglades was America's last frontier, a wild country long after the West was won. In this book Michael Grunwald chronicles how a series of visionaries tried to drain and "reclaim" it and how Mother Nature refused to bend to their will; in the most harrowing tale, a 1928 hurricane drowned 2,500 people in the Everglades. But the Army Corps of Engineers finally tamed the beast with levees and canals, converting half the Everglades into sprawling suburbs and sugar plantations.

In The World of J.R.R. Tolkien, you will join Dr. Dimitra Fimi to delve into Tolkien’s complex and multilayered mythology, examining all these ingredients and more. In these 10 lectures, you will explore and appreciate Middle-earth as medieval, mythological, and modern, a literary creation that was shaped by forces old and new. And you may be surprised to discover just how much of Tolkien’s legendarium was constructed posthumously, with his son Christopher compiling and publishing many of Tolkien’s later works after his death.

Bigger than any owl he knew, it looked like a small bear with decorative feathers. He snapped a quick photo and shared it with experts. Soon he was on a five-year journey, searching for this enormous, enigmatic creature in the lush, remote forests of Eastern Russia. That first sighting set his calling as a scientist.

In the darkest days of the American Revolution, Francis Marion and his band of militia freedom fighters kept hope alive for the patriot cause during the critical British southern campaign. Like the Robin Hood of legend, Marion and his men attacked from secret hideaways before melting back into the forest or swamp. Employing insurgent tactics that became commonplace in later centuries, Marion and his brigade inflicted losses on the enemy that were individually small but cumulatively a large drain on British resources and morale.

The stories from Norse mythology linger in our culture today. Four days of our week are named after members of the Norse pantheon (Tyr, Woden (Odin), Thor, and Frigg). Wagner’s Ring Cycle has kept one version of one of the great Norse stories alive in the minds of music lovers. Fans of modern fantasy will find many echoes of the Norse tales as well. Something in these old and puzzling stories still has the power to move and unsettle us and to inspire new acts of creation. This audiobook will give you a brief introduction to some of the best-known myths.

What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days, as New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology.

Historia
Remarkably little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. So little, in fact, that scientists and philosophers have, for centuries, been obsessed with what has become known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? What are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even in our age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mating or giving birth, and we still don’t understand what drives them, after living for decades in freshwater, to swim great distances back to the ocean at the end of their lives. They remain a mystery.

A squirrel in the garden. A rat in the wall. A pigeon on the street. Humans have spent so much of our history drawing a hard line between human spaces and wild places. When animals pop up where we don’t expect or want them, we respond with fear, rage, or simple annoyance. It’s no longer an animal. It’s a pest. At the intersection of science, history, and narrative journalism, Pests is not a simple call to look closer at our urban ecosystem. It’s not a natural history of the animals we hate. Instead, this book is about us.

Resumen del Editor
“Craig Pittman has a remarkable talent for telling stories set in the Sunshine State that never fail to fascinate and entertain. Sure, Cat Tale has plenty of laughs and Florida weirdness, but Pittman has written a truly inspirational story about the panther’s brush with extinction, and the human beings who were determined to save the species. You won’t be able to put Cat Tale down.” (Gilbert King, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Devil in the Grove)
It wasn’t so long ago when a lot of people thought the Florida panther was extinct. They were very nearly right. That the panther still exists at all is a miracle - the result of a desperate experiment that led to the most remarkable comeback in the history of the Endangered Species Act. And no one has told the whole story - until now.
With novelistic detail and an eye for the absurd, Craig Pittman recounts the extraordinary story of the people who brought the panther back from the brink of extinction, the ones who nearly pushed the species over the edge, and the cats that were caught in the middle. This being Florida, there’s more than a little weirdness, too.
An engrossing narrative of wry humor, sharp writing, and exhaustive reportage, Cat Tale shows what it takes to bring one species back and what unexpected costs such a decision brings.

Historia
Late one June night in 2011, a large animal collided with an SUV cruising down a Connecticut parkway. The creature appeared as something out of New England's forgotten past. Beside the road lay a 140-pound mountain lion. Speculations ran wild, the wildest of which figured him a ghostly survivor from a bygone century when lions last roamed the eastern United States. But a more fantastic scenario of facts soon unfolded.

Historia
For millennia, lions, tigers, and their man-eating kin have kept our dark, scary forests dark and scary, and their predatory majesty has been the stuff of folklore. But by the year 2150 big predators may only exist on the other side of glass barriers and chain-link fences. Their gradual disappearance is changing the very nature of our existence. We no longer occupy an intermediate position on the food chain; instead we survey it invulnerably from above - so far above that we are in danger of forgetting that we even belong to an ecosystem.

In this groundbreaking epic biography, Douglas Brinkley draws on never-before-published materials to examine the life and achievements of our "naturalist president." By setting aside more than 230 million acres of wild America for posterity between 1901 and 1909, Theodore Roosevelt made conservation a universal endeavor. This crusade for the American wilderness was perhaps the greatest U.S. presidential initiative between the Civil War and World War I.

Coyote America is both an environmental and a deep natural history of the coyote. It traces both the five-million-year-long biological story of an animal that has become the "wolf" in our backyards and its cultural evolution from a preeminent spot in Native American religions to the hapless foil of the Road Runner. A deeply American tale, the story of the coyote in the American West and beyond is a sort of Manifest Destiny in reverse.

Once upon a time, a group of libertarians got together and hatched the Free Town Project, a plan to take over an American town and completely eliminate its government. In 2004, they set their sights on Grafton, NH, a barely populated settlement with one paved road. When they descended on Grafton, public funding for pretty much everything shrank: the fire department, the library, the schoolhouse. State and federal laws became meek suggestions, scarcely heard in the town's thick wilderness.

Worth a listen even if you don't live in Florida
I enjoyed this for the history and context of the Florida panther's struggle. I was not as thrilled with the first part of the book, which focused on the "weird" part of the title -- I guess I don't have much chill about endangered species and hunting, so I would have like it to be treated more seriously. But when it got into the misdeeds of developers and politicians, it picked up a lot and there's plenty to outrage the listener!
The one thing I might have liked is some natural history of the Florida panther (behavior, life cycle, habitat needs), which there wasn't much of. But for a cat lover and fan of wildlife in general (and foe of evil developers and grifters) this is well worth a listen.

Good story
Kept my attention! Some dull parts, but a lot of fun, too. While it seems hopeless at times, there is hope at the end

the Panthers will to survive despite continual roadblocks
the corruption that blocked any decision that would have helped with the panther habitat preservation was despicable.
I admired those biologists who continued fighting for what they believed in

Cautionary tale
I very nearly skipped downloading this title because I thought I already knew most of “the story” but this work has far more information than I ever gleaned from earlier articles and books. Every person who owns property in Florida or loves wildlife or even just vacations in Florida needs to read this book, and then join any or all of the groups trying to “save” what remains of wild Florida before it’s paved over.

Daily deal snag
But had I known the book was out there, I would have paid full price. Not a born Floridian but am in Key Largo as often as I can be. I have heard bits and pieces of this story from locals.
Locals have a tendency to "over tell" local lore/gossip, what shocked me after listening to this is the fact they didn't over tell it, in fact if anything none of them had as much info about this mess as one should have when it happens in your back yard.
Floridian or not this is a good listen for the education in how egos, money and politics can send things in very bad directions.
Narration is great and he nails local names! Don't know if he is from FL or just did the DD to get it right. As someone who gets beyond annoyed by narrators who can't get names of places pronounced right, I was very happy!

I’m one of those citizens the author
mentions that was environmentally “radicalized” by Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” 50 + years ago... Worse, I recall a trip to the Florida Everglades… A magical place in my adolescent mind… in 1973 and my poor mother hitting with her car what we were sure what is a Florida panther late one evening on our way out of the park. She was heartbroken. In any event, Not only was I an easy mark or anything panther, I’m a sympathetic audience for almost any story or Crusade on behalf of endangered species. Clearly I come from a not so neutral perspective. In the intervening five decades I’ve also been all over the world... or at least a fair portion… And I have been an attorney dealing with state and federal Bureaucracies for much of it. All of which is a long unnecessary preamble to say this is an important book on a narrow subject and I wholeheartedly recommend. The writing is not supercharged and the subject necessitates some tedious details, but my hats off to The author for his expose. Confirms my dislike of almost anything governmental.

Wildlife, money, politics, corruption, greed, ego and lost opportunities
Well read, well-composed tale of Florida’s saga around their state animal, it’s survival and those who worked for and against that goal. Quirky, informative and detailed, it’s not exactly a page-turner, but it kept my attention and I’m glad I listened.

Depressing
Corruption, greed, cruelty and the worst of man's bad behavior have basically destroyed the Florida Panther. The book doesn't conclude with this, but it is obvious, the Florida Panther is NOT going to recover. The overwhelming amount of development in Florida has taken an enormous toll and the damage can not be undone. It is hardly a success or a comeback for the panther when their numbers are somewhere between 120-150. The only redeeming part of the book were the women, like Melody Roelke, who despite the rampant sexism actually made some discoveries. If they were listened to, this might have saved the panthers.
