I really love the setting, the characters and the storyline. I think I liked this one even better than the last one. Can’t wait to read more. Wish they had bundled these novels since they’re very short.

Solid writing with a good style and take on modern fantasy

Gritty, well written and a good itch scatter for Dresden fans. The performance is okay - but doesn’t mesh 100% with the writing style, but still very enjoyable.

Roots of trauma

The night side series is dark violent and very funny also. we get a deeper dive into Taylor's very effed up origin story, his 'business' practices and a brief look into to his assistant/apprentice and a solid meeting with Shotgun Suzie and her horrific childhood,she is so dark and still funny. Her part in the series grows from here. if you've always felt different, other,these are our people.

a genre all of its own

the night side series has been a favorite of mine since I was just a girl remember stealing my dad's copy of the first book and reading it in secret because it's a grown-up book and I was afraid he would take it away from me I fell in love with John Taylor then and here I am 20 years later still in love with him. with high fantasy lowbrow humor and that beautifully gritty noir the night side series has something for everyone make sure to grab your copy at the nearest app store today

‘Good’ vs. ‘Evil’ storyline has gratuitous violence with rape, incest, abortion, religious doctrine, graphic gore, and torture themes.

the second book in the series is just as breathtaking as the first. Shotgun Susie almost steals the show. The characters just get more intriguing as you travel through the Nightside.

The watered down Constantine episode

“Never go after the Maltese Falcon- it’s the first rule of detecting.”
Ah, yes, that ubiquitous plot in urban fantasies, where heaven and hell battle, and where the human world suffers the casualties. Combine the angels vs. demons schtick with the usual MacGuffin search and this installment was fairly formulaic.

“Let’s dance, darling!”
This one felt like a patchwork of scenes where John and Susie (a) face beings of intimidating power,
(b) we get said being’s dark origin story, (c) we’re told how evil said being is, (d) said being utters some brash, taunting dialogue, and then (e) John uses his finding power to find said being’s weakness and poof- being vanquished. The only question is whether said being is vanquished permanently or lives to posture another day.

Mr. Nasty, Belle, The Collector … they’re all just vehicles for John to utter a few pithy phrases. And of course, everyone and their brother knows about John’s mother, and drops the mysterious bread crumb about her identity that … wooooo (spooky sounds) … isn’t revealed … again … even though we can all guess at this point that she’s some kind of godlike being who’s behind John’s Mary Sue powers.
I mean really, a dozen people know who his mama is, and no one talks?! Puleeze!

“We monsters need to stick together.”
Which is not to say I hated this book. It’s fun matinee UF noir. One reviewer warned of abused women, abortions, and torture. But, it’s all at the level of the Constantine movie; with nary an F bomb in sight,
I’m not sure this would even merit the NC17 rating. I forgave yet another cliche, where the female sidekick’s backstory is, of course, sex abuse, and focused on enjoying the creative monsters and
the deliciously creepy world of the Nightside.
