If you want to enjoy life and laughter, read my Dancing Max Royster books. They are light-hearted stories about ballroom dancing, puppy love, crime and non-stop wisecracks. I, Frank Hickey, was raised in the blue-collar neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn, pushed out by crime into the elite prep-school world of Manhattan's Upper East Side. I did not buy into it. I rebelled. I still do. A hippie runaway, I later lived homeless and working for two years in Europe and North Africa. Back Stateside, knowing nothing about anything, I fumbled my way to working for ten years as a private eye, learning a bit more with each challenge and specializing in murder defense. Still loving the street and writing about it, I became a Detective-Investigator (Police Officer) in New York and then a police corporal in Savannah, Georgia and then a Los Angeles Police Officer, serving there for twelve years in high-crime areas. I am nobody's idea of a tough guy. I used to tell the gangsters that I was the toughest guy in my ballet class. They agreed. On a foot pursuit, I drove after the suspect and jumped out of my police car without putting in "park." I was running in front of my own car when it hit me. The suspect laughed so hard that he could not run anymore. I caught him and swore him to silence. This was my daily round. Sometimes, I wonder how I survived all this. Maybe it was so that I could write to you about it. These books show the joy of life. Read them and laugh with the rest.
