Publisher's summary

After losing her mother to cancer a few months prior to graduating, Bree Forbes was finally able to take some time away and enjoy her college days. That all changed in the blink of an eye the moment Bree came home for break. She didn't expect to find her dad strapped to a chair, a gun pointed at his head.

Alzerro "Zerro" King wasn't a man to be messed with. Women flocked to him, and men ran from him. He ruled the mafia with an iron fist, and no one ever crossed him unless they wanted to pay the price. He believed that the only way to pay for something, if unable to do so, was to do it in blood. Nothing got him harder than stringing someone up and putting a bullet in their head. That was until Bree.

One look was all it took for him to know that she could pay for her father's debt in many other ways - ways that could get him hard. Could a big-city Mafia king fall in love with the small-town country girl? When push comes to shove, would Bree end up running only to be killed? Or would she sacrifice herself for love?

Contains mature themes.

A Mess of a Story

Could've been a good story if author stayed on track with main plot and kept characters from sounding so stupid or dominant. The female was young and stupid. Back and forth, all over the place with ridiculous lines. The male lead was dominant, a jerk but some redeeming qualities towards the end. Too many sex scenes- how many ways could you describe sex? It gets kind of old to listen to. I fast forwarded quite a bit. Narration was about the only positive thing from the story. Sean Crisden is excellent except for his female voices - not the strongest but ok. I listened to this as part of the romance package. I would never have used a credit for this story.

The King

This was a great first mafia book to start this series! I love Bree although she has some weak parts to her, she is strong in a lot of other ways. King is multifaceted and complex. His cruelty and lack of trust is equal to his passion and love. It will be interesting to see how their love story evolves.

Bad narration, not able to suspend disbelief, short and shallow.

Narration: Neither is able to do a voice of the opposite gender without ears bleeding. One knows nothing of the pronunciation of Italian words, the other is inconsistent (this is a small gripe as neither does a decent generic Italian to American accent either, but many listeners don’t know either).

Story: The author doesn’t know the structure of most Italian-American mafias, or etiquette. This makes the suspension of disbelief impossible. The male protagonist is described as a capo, not the boss/don…yet he is said to be the boss. If described to fit the standard (there are deviations), Al “Zerro” would be a capo who killed the don, not two heads of families. Zerro has no family. So many other fails that a basic online search would have made clear. If he was from a family that was snuffed out, Zerro as a male would have been killed. It doesn’t take reading books about actual Italian mafia to gain this information.

Characters: Female protagonist is so incredibly idiotic she is a liability to herself. Reality would see her used and out on a corner to work off debt. Also, dead people can’t keep hustling to pay to stay alive. Thieves are traitors and killed, but loan sharks don’t kill people who are still able to keep trying to pay off a debt that isn’t ever actually payable… that’s the con, many people desperately trying to pay all barely paying off the interest (like school loans with payments set so high many can’t pay and will continue to pay in for the rest of their lives…I know people who paid off homes faster than a much smaller student debt).

The whole book is ridiculous and I’d have turned out the dumb b after one night…if I was a psycho criminal boss who wanted payment on a monetary loan.

Brutal love story!

This is a story that is just barely interesting enough to hold your attention. It's a brutal love story about a daughter who is trying to save her father from a debt owed to the mafia. It deals with good vs evil, betrayal, trust ... all mixed up to form a dysfunctional relationship that struggles to overcome criminal roots

I think it is worth a sale...possibly a credit (which I used) if you have nothing better to read on the horizon.

mafia beauty and the beast

If you like beauty and the beast this is the grown up version with Italians instead of French.

MIssed the mark

The story line sounded interesting. But the characters fell flat. Bree was just not a believable character at all. She is quite annoying character and inconsistent. Could not finish the book.

The narrators did well.

The end??

This book ends on a cliffhanger so I suggest having another credit ready to go! Strong female lead and strong male lead.
