Thanks to the help of kind strangers, he was barely able to survive the bitterly cold weather. Out of desperation, but with little hope, a letter was sent to the only relative he knew. His uncle, Abel Horn, responded and Zeke was saved from what would have been a terrible death. Abel and Zeke set out on the long journey to Abel’s home in Kentucky. Why Rich People Love Fascism is a provocative examination of the unholy alliance between capital and authoritarianism. This book cuts through the myths of political neutrality and liberal virtue to reveal a stark truth: when the wealthy face the threat of democracy, they consistently choose fascism. Not by accident. Not under duress. But willingly, and often eagerly. Drawing on a century of history, the book traces how economic elites have repeatedly aligned themselves with far-right regimes—from Mussolini’s Italy to Hitler’s Germany to Pinochet’s Chile—not because of shared ...

Everybody Loves a Good Drought is the established classic on rural poverty in India. Twenty years after publication, it remains unsurpassed in the scope and depth of reportage, providing an intimate view of the daily struggles of the poor and the efforts, often ludicrous, made to uplift them. An illuminating introduction accompanying this 20-anniversary edition reveals, alarmingly, how a large section of India continues to suffer in the name of development so that a small percentage may prosper.

What does the good news of Jesus mean for economics? Too often, Christian teaching and ministry have focused only on the gospel's spiritual significance and ignored its physical, real-world ramifications. But loving our neighbor well has direct economic implications, and in our diverse and stratified society we need to grapple with them now more than ever. In The Economics of Neighborly Love pastor Tom Nelson sets out to address this problem.

The average American produces 102 tons of garbage across a lifetime, and $50 billion in squandered riches are rolled to the curb each year. But our bins are just the starting point for a strange, impressive, mysterious, and costly journey that may also represent the greatest untapped opportunity of the century. In Garbology, Edward Humes investigates trash - what's in it; how much we pay for it; how we manage to create so much of it; and how some families, communities, and even nations are finding a way back from waste to discover a new kind of prosperity.

Looking back through it, I’m reminded of what I cared about before the world fell apart with lockdowns, mandates, and the ensuing existential crisis of civilization itself. I wondered at first if this book mattered anymore but now I’m sure it does. My theme is meaning. Not big meaning but meaning in small things. The meaning of everyday life. Robots may one day rule the world, but what is a robot-ruled Earth like? Many think the first truly smart robots will be brain emulations, or ems. Scan a human brain, then run a model with the same connections on a fast computer, and you have a robot brain, but recognizably human. Train an em to do some job and copy it a million times; an army of workers is at your disposal. When they can be made cheaply, within perhaps a century, ems will displace humans in most jobs.
