Story2
Although the armies of the ancient Greek, or "Hellenic", city-states (poleis, singular polis) included both cavalry (hippeis) and light infantry (psiloi, peltastes, gymnetes), their mainstay was undoubtedly the heavy infantry known today as hoplites. Armed to the teeth with their distinctive round shield (aspis or hoplon), high-crested helmet (corys) and long spear (dory), the hoplites were some of the most efficient soldiers of their time.

At the dawn of Western history, one man’s final stand against an empire forged a legend that would echo for millennia. Leonidas: The Last King of Sparta is the definitive retelling of the life and legacy of the warrior who defied Persia at the narrow pass of Thermopylae — not as a comic-book hero or marble statue, but as a flesh-and-blood king shaped by duty, law, and fate. In this sweeping historical narrative, A. K. Thompson reconstructs the world that made Leonidas: a Sparta without walls, ...

This epic biography puts you in the dust and the council tent, where myth meets logistics. Watch a young king throw a spear toward Asia and then keep it there with pay chests, grain ships, and a moving city of soldiers. See a road built across the sea at Tyre, a whisper in a dark room at Siwa, and torches licking the gold at Persepolis. March with elephants at the Hydaspes. Hear the rain at the Hyphasis when an army finally says no....
