Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales, a literary genre he so mastered that he himself has become as mythical as the tales he wrote. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyrs, or "fantastic tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.

This unique fairy tale filled with whimsy and satire is much more than a story for the nursery. The tale begins with two old philosophers who live in a dark pine wood with their companions the Grey woman of Dun Gortin and the Thin Woman of Inis Magrath. When the wife of farmer MacMurrachu loses her washing board, the farmer comes to ask the philosophers for advice. They direct the old farmer not to a washboard, but to a tree containing a pot of gold.

Many old Irish folktales tell about the deeds and adventures of Finn MacCool—a great hunter and warrior and the strongest giant in Ireland. As you will see from this story, even a famous giant needs a little help once in a while.

A family of pixies is looking for a place for their children to sleep, but nowhere on the farm is good enough. Will they find somewhere in time to return the farmers horse and cart for planting season? Listen along with this Cornish folktale and see just where a pixie littling can get some sleep.
