Rumi has been described as "the most popular poet" in the United States. Rumi's popularity has gone beyond national and ethnic borders. He is considered to be one of the greatest classical poets, by the speakers of Persian language in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Ryokan (1758–1831) is, along with Dogen and Hakuin, one of the three giants of Zen in Japan.
