Bleak Horror

Rahmenhandlung dieses großen Gesellschaftsromans ist das Gerichtsverfahren Jarndyce gegen Jarndyce um eine Erbschaft. Der Roman lebt jedoch von Einzelgeschichten, die ineinander verwoben sind. Da ist die Erzählung um das "Waisenmädchen" Esther Summerson, das nach dem Tod seiner Tante von John Jarndyce, einem Beteiligten des Erbschaftsstreits und reichen Oberschichtler, in Bleak House aufgenommen wird.

A Christmas trip to the family cabin goes awry for a grieving college student.

New in the house, and rebutted by Mary Walker at every opportunity, Jennie experiences odd sounds and sightings in Abigail's room, and Abigail's constant preoccupation with the 'imaginary' birdman. Then there's the omnipresent stench of death seemingly emanating from the very ground beneath the house. The Walkers fob off her concerns and Jennie is left to solve the mysteries of the Bleak House alone and in a strange place.
