Netty Dyer can’t help but suspect foul play when her mother is found dead on her wedding night, following her marriage to a much younger man. Unable to come to terms with the death, or her guilt at their recent estrangement, Netty has her mother admitted to Dunn and Gonne, a waiting mortuary where the recently deceased are watched in the hope that they wake.

With the help of the mortuary assistant Constance Dunn and private investigator Charles Hunter, Netty investigates her new father, and the family he claims to be part of.
