The bookshelves of European literature are incredible collections that have gathered together centuries of very talented authors. From this continent their fame spread and whilst among their number many are now forgotten or neglected their talents endure. Among them is the very talented Nobel prize winning Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf.

Selma Lagerlöf and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson were two of the greatest nineteenth centurey Nordic authors who were both awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Lagerlof was a Swedish novelist, who in 1909 became the first woman writer to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Her work is deeply rooted in Nordic legends and history. She turned away from the dominating realistic movement and wrote in a romantic and imaginative manner about the peasant life and landscape of Northern Sweden.

Selma Lagerlöf, born in Värmland, Sweden in 1858, was a celebrated writer whose illustrious career earned her the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. She passed away in her homeland in 1940. The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (originally Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige) is one of her most renowned works, published in two parts in 1906 and 1907.
