Sie bittet Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, den Todesfall zu untersuchen. Schnell entdeckt er Risse in der scheinbar friedvollen Fassade des kleinen Dorfes.

Den lille studiekreds af amatørforfattere i Midsomer Worthy har inviteret den berømte forfatter, Max Jennings, til at tale ved et af deres møder. De mere realistiske af medlemmerne ved godt af det nok var lidt vel ambitiøst, men de forstod ikke hvorfor forfatterkredsens sekretær, Gerald Hadleigh, modsatte sig invitationene så lidenskabeligt. Til alles forbløffelse siger Jennings ja, og få timer efter mødet er slut, er Hadleigh myrdet.

Als eines der Gruppenmitglieder tot aufgefunden wird, ist kaum jemand aus dem Dorf wirklich überrascht. Zunächst sieht alles nach einem Unglück aus - doch dann folgt ein weiterer Todesfall.

In Compton Dando beobachtet man die neuen Bewohner des Herrenhauses mit äußerstem Misstrauen. Sie behaupten, mit Geistern und fernen Planeten in Verbindung zu stehen. Und so wundert es kaum jemanden, als einer der New-Age-Jünger tot aufgefunden wird. Bald ist auch noch ein zweiter Todesfall zu beklagen, und Barnaby steht vor einem höchst verworrenen Rätsel. Der dritte Barnaby-Krimi in bester britischer Tradition, von Frank Arnold großartig interpretiert.
