There came a soldier marching down the high road-one, two! one, two! He had his knapsack on his back and his sword at his side as he came home from the wars. On the road he met a witch, an ugly old witch, a witch whose lower lip dangled right down on her chest.

"The Tinder Box" is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. A poor soldier returning home from war meets a witch who asks him to climb into a hollow tree to retrieve a magic tinder box. In the tree, he finds three chambers filled with precious coins guarded by three monstrous dogs, "one with eyes the size of teacups", who guards a vault filled with pennies, one with "eyes the size of water wheels", who guards a vault filled with silver, and one with eyes "the size of Round Tower", who guards a vault filled with gold.

A healthy soldier comes upon an old witch and a hollow tree while on his way home from the war. Before long, he has acquired an old lighter and all the money he could want. Meanwhile, the beautiful princess of the small town has been locked up by her own parents. The soldier falls in love with her - but cannot find a way to win her. Thanks to some good friends he made with the witch's help, he ends up avoiding public execution and winning the princess' heart.

The tale is about the cheerful soldier, who with a help from an old witch and her tinderbox, wins the princess and marries her. Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Tinderbox in 1835.
