When Tarzan is orphaned as a baby deep in the African jungle, he is saved from certain death when he is adopted by a she-ape. Raised as one of her own, Tarzan learns the way of the Kerchak - the tribe of great apes who rule the jungle. They teach him how to survive, to hunt, to swing through the trees, and to communicate with the other animals of the jungle. By the time he is a young man Tarzan has the courage and strength of 10 men. But it is his human brain that allows him to be the King of the Apes. And Lord of the Jungle.

"The God of Tarzan". Tarzan discovers the concept of "God" in the books preserved in the cabin of his deceased parents, to which he pays regular visits. He inquires among members of his ape tribe for further elucidation without success, and continues his investigation among the cannibals of the nearby village and the natural phenomena of his world, such as the sun and moon. Eventually he concludes that God is none of these, but the creative force permeating everything. Somehow, though, the dreaded snake Histah falls outside this.

In this collection of 12 short stories, Burroughs returns to Tarzan's early years, providing new depth and detail to the Lord of the Jungle during his time among the great apes. Having learned to read from his father's books, Tarzan seeks to apply his knowledge to the world around him and to learn more about life, death, dreams, God, love, and friendship.

The story of a young man who, although born of a woman, was left by a succession of untoward circumstances to be reared in an African jungle by a she-ape, the only mother he ever knew. Tarzan was drawn from the jungle by love for a young American girl whom chance threw in his way. Disappointment in love, in this volume, results in his return to the jungle where he has many strange adventures and whence he is again led forth by love, this time happy love.

The Son of Tarzan is Edgar Rice Burroughs' fourth novel in the Tarzan series. First serialized between 1915 and 1916 in All-Story Weekly, it was published as a novel in 1917. Narrowly surviving his encounter with his enemy Tarzan in The Beasts of Tarzan, Alexis Paulvitch has a score to settle. It was a city of hideous men - and of beautiful, savage women, over whom reigned La, high priestess of the Flaming God. Its altars were stained with the blood of many sacrifices. Unheeding of the dangers, Tarzan led a band of savage warriors toward the ancient crypts and the more ancient evil of Opar.

In the late 19th century, a group of travelers become marooned in the coastal jungles of equatorial Africa. Among the group, John and Alice Clayton give birth to a boy, but soon misfortune strikes and both parents sadly die. A she-ape named Kala adopts the young orphaned boy and names him Tarzan. Thus is born the beginning of the Tarzan legacy!

In the third in Burroughs' famous series, Tarzan becomes entangled with a new Russian enemy, and finds himself stranded on an isolated island while his wife and son have been kidnapped.

Just when Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, looks to be settled happily into family life with his wife, Jane, and their son, Jack, Tarzan’s arch-enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, kidnaps the infant boy. With his son’s life set to be forfeit to a tribe of African cannibals, Tarzan enlists the help of the beasts of the jungle to rescue his son.

This venture into the wild kingdom thrusts Jane into the thickest of demoniacal plots as Tarzan’s nemesis, the dark and swarthy Rokoff and his rat-like lieutenant capture her with the intention of wreaking vengeance on Tarzan. But Tarzan assembles an awesome rescue squad; Mugambi, a giant native from the jungle who becomes the devoted follower and protector of Tarzan; Sheeta, a sleek and powerful black panther longing to apply fang and claw to those who would harm Jane; and the entire tribe of Akut, of the great apes, enraged and eager.

The action is set during World War I. While John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan), is away from his plantation home in British East Africa, it is destroyed by invading German troops from Tanganyika. On his return, he discovers among many burned bodies one that appears to be the corpse of his wife, Jane Porter Clayton. Another fatality is the Waziri warrior Wasimbu, left crucified by the Germans. Maddened, the ape-man seeks revenge not only on the perpetrators of the tragedy, but all Germans, and he sets out for the battlefront of the war in East Africa.

Paulvitch seeks revenge against Tarzan once again, this time by luring Lord Greystoke's rebellious son away from London. The great ape Akut and the son flee to the savage African jungle where Tarzan was reared and discover that the perils of the jungle are nothing compared to the evils of men.

The half-dead American raved of an unknown city…of women warriors ruled by a malignant wizard…of a great diamond, the Gonfal, with strange hypnotic power…of a long-lost English nobleman…of the savage queen who had betrayed her duty and helped him to escape.
