On Thursday, 1st July, 1999, Dr Nina Simone gave a rare performance as part of Nick Cave's Meltdown Festival. After the show, in a state of awe, Warren Ellis crept onto the stage, took Dr Simone's piece of chewed gum from the piano, wrapped it in her stage towel and put it in a Tower Records bag. The gum remained with him for 20 years—a sacred totem, his creative muse, a conduit that would eventually take Ellis back to his childhood and his relationship with found objects, growing in significance with every passing year.

Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in small-town North Carolina, Nina Simone was a musical child. She sang before she talked and learned to play piano at a very young age. With the support of her family and community, she received music lessons that introduced her to classical composers like Bach who remained with her and influenced her music throughout her life. She loved the way his music began softly and then tumbled to thunder, like her mother's preaching, and in much the same way as her career.

Fifteen-year-old Nina and her family are struggling to hold things together in the wake of the accidental death of her brother several years earlier. Seeking refuge in art, Nina's mother has painted a series of nude portraits of her remaining child. As these haunting images go public, Nina is forced to deal with her burgeoning sexuality in front of a large and critical audience.

Es ist passiert, nachdem sie Schriften über das Leben Jeanne d'Arcs gelesen hat. Das tut sie oft, abends, vor dem Einschlafen. Diesmal aber ist Merkwürdiges geschehen.
