Written in 1867, The Magic Fishbone is one of Charles Dickens' best loved fairy tales for children. It tells the story of an impoverished King who can barely manage to keep his nineteen children, and it is a long time until pay day. One day he meets a Fairy Godmother who tells him to give his eldest daughter, Princess Alicia, a piece of salmon, and after she has eaten everything but the bone, she is to dry and polish the bone carefully because it has magic powers.

In the wonderful fairy tale, Charles Dickens creates a number of memorable characters, including a King, who also has a regular office job and is always running out of money, his lovely wife, the Queen and their 17 children, as well as an elderly and very cranky fairy who gives their eldest daughter a magic fishbone she can use to grant one wish. However it will only work if the "circumstances are right".

After Princess Alicia finds a magic fish-bone, compliments of her fairy godmother, she eventually uses it to improve financial conditions for her father the king, queen, and her 18 brothers and sisters. This classic bedtime story for kids was written by Charles Dickens in 1867, although Mr. Dickens credits the tale to a Miss Alice Rainbird (aged seven), as it gives a very heartwarming glimpse into a Victorian world which can only be seen through the eyes of an innocent child.
