Contained in this book is the story of Miyamoto Musashi. Born in the 16th century in the Harima Province of Japan, he was (and still is) considered the greatest swordsman that ever lived. At the age of 17, he forewent the practice of farming to embrace life as a travelling swordsman, fighting duels with the best swordsmen he could find. From the day he unsheathed his sword until he breathed his last breath, he remained undefeated. Musashi-san was more than just a warrior. He was an artist, a philosopher, a teacher, a poet, a sage, and a hermit.

Little may have been known about Musashi at the time, but centuries later, he is the most infamous and renowned warrior in Japanese history. As a veteran of the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Naiwa (1615), and the Shimabara Rebellion in Hizen (1637-1638), Musashi was a seasoned battlefield soldier, who went undefeated in over 60 duels, and authored an essential book on strategy Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings).
