Die Protagonistin Bertha Garlan, eine in einer Kleinstadt lebende Witwe, trifft in Wien ihre Jugendliebe, den gefeierten Violinvirtuosen Emil Lindbach, wieder. Für einen kurzen Moment hofft sie, der provinziellen Enge ihres Daseins entkommen zu können.
