Why do Irish people say ‘amn’t’?

There are lots of things we say and do that are that little bit different on this island.

A particularly noticeable one is our use of the word ‘amn’t’.

So are we just saying it wrong or why is it that we don’t say aren’t or ain’t like most of the English speaking world?
