On July 11, 1989, Rozanne Pelloni called the Wallingford Police Department to report that she’d been told Mark Vincent had “offed” his daughter Doreen. In a conversation lasting more than two hours, Rozanne struggled to get through to Sergeant Steve Davis. Despite her disturbing allegations about Mark and her obvious fear for her own safety, Sergeant Davis responded like a product of his time – a stereotypical 80s cop who placed little stock in anything she had to say. Providing historic and recent case studies of violence against women Tracey Thurman, Jennifer Magnano, Jennifer Dulos, and Karizmah Johnson, Jessica examines the struggles and lessons learned when it comes to Connecticut’s role in combating violence against women. And she wonders: if law enforcement had cared more about what the many women in Doreen’s story had to say, would we be any closer to finding her?

In the months after Doreen disappeared, Mark Vincent told everyone he spent every waking moment looking for her. Instead he was perfecting the art of the hobosexual – pursuing relationships with women like Rozanne Pelloni just to have a place to live. When these relationships eventually imploded, secrets about what Mark had really been up to would spill out. So what would the Wallingford Police do with this new information, and would it get them any closer to an answer?

I have followed Doreen's story since the Faded Out podcast. It was the first podcast that I listened to. Jessica continues Doreen's story in Walk Softly Children. Jessica shares the facts with compassion and care. I believe she truly cares for the family and Doreen. The podcast is raw, comes across as truthful and not self serving. Jessica has brought Doreen's story out of the dark, no longer forgotten, no longer ignored.

Well done and heartfelt.

Speaking as the host of Faded Out, the podcast where we first covered Doreen's story, I can say that Jessica has moved mountains in Doreen's case in a way that I never could and that law enforcement hadn't been able to do in almost 34 years. Mark is currently in jail on a gun charge and that wouldn't have happened if the heat hadn't been put back on him. I have a feeling Doreen's case will be closed in the foreseeable future and she will finally be able to rest in peace. Excellent work, Jess. <3

Jessica has done what the police have been unable (or unwilling) to do for 34 years: bring to light a ton of information through intense investigative work. She is relentless in her pursuit of the truth, and because of her hard work and dedication on this case, it appears that the guilty party will finally be brought to justice. She is a wonderful writer as well, and she tells the "story" with empathy and compassion for the families. There is nothing sensationalized here. It is true and heartfelt and heartbreaking.

Done Well and with Compassion

My name is Brad, and I am Mark Vincent's older brother. What Jess has accomplished in her pursuit of Doreen's disappearance is amazing. There was never any doubt in the minds of Mark's siblings (4 of us), that he killed her, but there was also no hard evidence, and the case went dark for 30+ years. Although what Jess has unearthed may not be considered "hard evidence", it is very strong circumstantial evidence. Consequently, while it may to tough to convict Mark of killing Doreen, Jess is relentless and has moved mountains in that direction.
