  • The Mysterious Case Of Alpha Gal
    Apr 13 2026

For the first 40 years of her life, Amy Pearl was a card-carrying member of the meat club; she literally had a credit card from the famous Brooklyn steakhouse Peter Luger. Then one day she ate a porterhouse steak, and nearly died. This week we join forces with our friends at Radiolab to tell the story of how Amy's mysterious allergy was identified by scientists. Plus, she tells us how the allergy has changed her relationship to food — and we find out if it’ll ever go away.

  • Live: Kenji López-Alt No Longer Calls His Recipes “The Best” (Reheat)
    Apr 10 2026

Chef, YouTuber, and cookbook author J. Kenji López-Alt joins Dan on stage at Swedish American Hall in San Francisco to celebrate the release of Kenji's new book, The Wok: Recipes and Techniques. It wouldn't be a Kenji interview without some science, so we delve into what's happening, thermodynamically, when you cook with a wok. But we also go deep on how Kenji became the internet cooking science guru that he is today – and how his feelings about that role have changed in recent years. If you've ever googled a recipe plus the word "Kenji," you won't want to miss this conversation.

This episode originally aired on March 14, 2022, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Johanna Mayer, Tracey Samuelson, Jared O'Connell, and Ameeta Ganatra. The Sporkful team now includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Kameel Stanley, Jared O'Connell, and India Rice. This update was produced by Gianna Palmer.

Wow, this show is food and cooking techniques all rolled around in pop culture powder. I got a history less on indigenous life while listening to some of the best poetry I've ever hear. Laughed so hard, that I started to chock.

Come for the food porn, stay for the education 😋

Wow. What happened to Dan in this episode? Normally, he asks really great questions and pushes back a little against establishment ideas. But when his guests talk about how no one is forcing people to work at Noma and they shouldn't complain about not getting paid, he doesn't push back at all. Instead, he waited to do a voice over to address the inequality inherent in unpaid internships. This whole episode seemed like another "millennials are ruining this industry" piece that is really disappointing. At no point does anyone address that people probably aren't going to these restaurants because we can't afford our rent, let alone a 900$ meal. For the record Vivian, I don't prefer counter service, I just can't afford to participate in your "dining room experience". And no one is forcing you to serve flat bread that takes 3 days and 8 people to make.
