  • How children become numerate a description of Les Staves course.
    Apr 17 2025
The session focuses on the foundational processes and skills necessary for developing a solid understanding of numbers in early numeracy. It examines the key aspects of early numeracy that children with severe, complex and neurodiverse learning needs often struggle with. The session highlights the foundational processes and skills necessary for developing a solid understanding of numbers. It explores the root concepts, such as number sense and counting, that underpin early mathematical learning. These are fundamental areas that educators are likely interested in. The session explores how to support learners in grasping the basics of number sense and counting. This emphasizes the practical application of the session's content. Attendees will understand how children begin to make sense of numbers and their relationships (the roots of number sense). The session aims to equip attendees with practical strategies and resources adaptable to meet learners' unique needs. The session will cover core knowledge and number sense, including perceptual subitising (awareness of number words, finger representations, and the number line). More aspects of subitising, including conceptual subitising and approximate number sense, will be introduced. The session will address understanding the purposes of counting and illustrate the principles of counting. This reinforces the practical understanding of counting. The course is appropriate for classroom practitioners from special schools and colleges, mainstream settings with specialist SEN provision, and early years settings working with pupils with severe/complex learning needs and autism. The presenter, Les Staves, has extensive experience working with special children and a national reputation for inspirational training. Les Staves is the author of respected books on teaching mathematics to children with severe and profound learning difficulties. The cost of the session is £135 plus VAT per delegate A recording and transcript of the Zoom chat will be available for 10 days after the event. New for 2025, practical reflective practice suggestions and a toolkit of additional resources will be provided. There is an opportunity to connect with other professionals through the Facebook Group, Sensory Support Spaghetti. This offers a community aspect to the training.
