  • The Balance of Passion and Business - With Libs Elliott
    Nov 26 2025
Episode 064Libs and I fired up this conversation a few weeks before we hung out in person at the European Patchwork Meeting in September. She was just finishing up the work that she exhibited (what a WOW show) and we talked a lot about managing the balance between the art we make for the soul, and art we make for the biz. I can tell you that after hanging out in person for a week, I’ve added Libs to my list of fave peeps in the biz. She is thoughtful and generous, and really cares about taking care of the community she has created (the Sew Squad!). I enjoy her perspectives on things (see also our bonus recording with Daisy Aschehoug from EPM!) and honestly can’t wait to have another good gab with her… right after we both hit some deadlines!Show NotesWebsite - https://libselliott.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/libselliottYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/libselliottFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/libselliottPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/libselliottSneaky Dee’s Bar in Toronto, Canada - https://www.sneakydees.com/Cliff’s PDX - https://www.cliffspdx.com/Lib’s Textile Tour in Japan - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/trips-to-kyotoNancy McDonough - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/who-we-areSew Squad - https://sewsquad.libselliott.com/European Patchwork Meeting - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/Luke Haynes - https://www.luke.art/Zak Foster - https://www.zakfoster.com/Productive Flourishing - Start Finishing - https://www.productiveflourishing.com/p/start-finishingTeam Habits - https://www.productiveflourishing.com/p/team-habitsHeidi Parkes - https://www.heidiparkes.com/Tara Faughnan - https://tarafaughnan.com/QuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-homeSoak Wash - https://soakwash.com/Jacqueline Sava - https://soakwash.com/blogs/soak-stories/soak-story-1Andover Fabrics - https://www.andoverfabrics.com/Libs Fabric Collections - https://www.andoverfabrics.com/SingleDesignerNew.php?Designer=Libs%20ElliottTula Pink - https://www.tulapink.com/Alison Glass - https://alisonglass.com/Juki TL-18 QVP - https://jukiquilting.com/products/haruka-tl-18qvp.htmlPfaff Passport - https://www.singer.com/products/pfaff-passport-2-0-sewing-machine?srsltid=AfmBOopr79ehdR__jUhybwXPK_qaO2AoyDcwS4nR6crultIls32aHa9A&variant=47703999086871Pfaff expressions - https://www.singer.com/collections/all-pfaff-machines?srsltid=AfmBOopCnN1nVb7VdJN0s-TvVPtt9N2kp29_Xq_TzT3QtF_vQw3P6QQFDaisy Ashehoug - https://daisyaschehoug.com/How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. • Choosing the Rules to Follow - with Chawne Kimber
    Nov 12 2025
Episode 063It was SO great to sit down with Chawne Kimber and talk about her quilts. I was a huge fan of her work before I met her, and through the years of our friendship, my appreciation for both her and the work she makes has only deepened. Much of her work has a deep intentionality in the materials and their origin, and Chawne integrates that with the meaning of the pieces. She’s also got the best sense of humor and play too, and I love it when she lets that loose. Our convo covers a lot of her thoughts about making. She talks about rules - the ones that make sense to follow (like those that create integrity in construction) and those that should be heartily ignored. She speaks of having a machine set up with a small pile of fabric next to it to just sit and doodle - and by doodle she means sew the small pieces to just see what happens. Nothing like my process, but I’m planning to try the similar doodling (tho perhaps with other media) to just see what happens. Getting a peek into another’s artistic process is such a treat, and a privilege too. I really hope you enjoy this one.Show Notes:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cauchycomplete/?hl=enQuilting for Dummies - https://amzn.to/3HA5EHUTonya Ricucci - http://lazygalquilting.blogspot.com/Word Play Quilts - https://amzn.to/4fA8AkmBonnie Hunter’s Blog - https://quiltville.blogspot.com/Cotton Sophisticate, 2015 (I’m Just a Sophisticated Cotton Picker) - https://www.internationalquiltmuseum.org/quilt/20210500002The One for Eric - https://www.saqa.com/art/browse-collection/one-eric-gSamantha Hoyt - https://www.agatheringofstitches.com/Gather Here - https://gatherhereonline.com/QuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-homeTara Faughnan - https://tarafaughnan.com/Slow Poetry #1 - https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/slow-poetry-1-120751Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California - https://bampfa.org/event/exhibition-tour-routed-west-twentieth-century-african-american-quilts-californiaOf Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South - Curated by Dr. Sharbreon Plummer - https://www.msmuseumart.org/exhibition/of-salt-spirit/Unconventional & Unexpected By Roderick Kiracofe - https://www.quiltfolk.com/product/unconventional-unexpected/Tracey Emin - https://www.instagram.com/traceyeminstudio/?hl=en*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. • Always Learning and Experiencing - with Latifah Saafir
    Oct 29 2025
I first met Latifah as she helmed the Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild about 15 years ago, and it’s been an honor to remain connected over the years, and to see her business and statute in the industry develop. We talk about how being a traveling educator gave her an inside look at so many quilts shops, and how that information formed her pattern + ruler/template strategy. Latifah used her background in engineering to create the Clammy™ and HuRTy™ rulers and the patterns that use them.We talk about choosing when and where to grow a business, and also when and where to scale back as circumstances demand (Latifah cared for her elderly grandfather until he passed), a tango of experimentation and refinement as circumstances dictate or allow. Finally, we talk about the importance of speaking up for each other within our industry, making safe spaces for our colleagues that have historically not been safe, and creating broader communities that are inviting and inclusive.Show NotesWebsite - https://www.latifahsaafirstudios.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/latifahsaafirstudios/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/latifahsaafirstudiosYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@LatifahSaafirStudiosLos Angeles Modern Quilt Guild - https://lamqg.org/Jacquie Gering - https://www.jacquiegering.com/Alissa Haight Carlton - https://www.alissahaightcarlton.com/The Modern Quilt Guild - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/homeThe Clammy™ - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/clammy-patternsGlam Clam Quilt - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/pdf-patterns/products/glam-clam-quilt-pdfJaybird Quilts - https://www.jaybirdquilts.com/HuRTy™ Rulers - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/the-hurtyQuilt Market - https://www.quilts.com/quilt-market/Janome M7 - https://www.janome.com/product/continental-m7-professional/Carolyn Friedlander - https://carolynfriedlander.com/Giucy Giuce - https://www.giucygiuce.com/Ruby Star Society - https://www.rubystarsociety.com/Sarah Watts - https://www.sarahwatts.com/Rashida Coleman-Hale - https://www.rashidacolemanhale.com/Linear by Rashida Coleman-Hale - rashida coleman hale linear*Atomic Habits by James Clear - https://amzn.to/47fypUEPine Meadows Ranch - https://roundhousefoundation.org/pine-meadow-ranch/Allie of Exhausted Octopus - https://exhaustedoctopus.com/Michelle Wilkie - https://www.mlwilkie.com/ National Quilt Museum - https://quiltmuseum.org/*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication.
