    John William Greene Jr. was an instrumental figure in black aviation in the Washington D.C. area. He was a flight instructor and founding member of the Cloud Club. This black aero club owned and operated its own commercial airport, a 1st for black aviators.

    Dorothy Layne McIntyre was a valiant individual who would become the 1st Black Aviatrix (perhaps the 1st woman at all) to earn a civilian’s pilot license under Civil Aeronautics Authority (now FAA) in 1940.

    Oscar Wayman Holmes. Holmes broke three color barriers, becoming the 1st Black air traffic controller in 1941 and a year later becoming the 1st commissioned Black officer in the U.S. Navy and the 1st Black Navy pilot. Holmes never set out to break down racial barriers – he just wanted to be a pilot.

    Edward Albertis Gibbs was a prominent figure in Black aviation history. He was a civil flight instructor for those who would become Tuskegee Airmen. Edward also was the founder & 1st president of the Negro Airmen International (N.A.I.) organization.
