For years, some law enforcement agencies have replaced the faces of traditional playing card decks with images of missing and murdered people and distributed those cards in prisons hoping inmates would come forward with information needed to crack these cold cases wide open. Now, audiochuck is dealing you in. Each week, we will be working with investigators and family members to bring you the details of some of the coldest cases from around the country in hopes that someone listening can finally bring these victims the justice they deserve.audiochuck Biografías y Memorias Crímenes Reales

  • Darnell Smith (5 of Diamonds, California)
    Oct 22 2025

Our card this week is Darnell Smith, the 5 of Diamonds from California.

Darnell Smith’s family never expected him – a pastor’s son and an ambitious student – to get killed in a hail of gunfire. For a young man without even a whisper of a criminal record, no one would have expected his life to end in such a violent way at the age of twenty. But Darnell Smith’s death became entangled in a world his family was never a part of — and left investigators scrambling to unravel what would soon become a neighborhood nightmare. For more than a decade it seemed like there was no hope for justice… but when our reports went to visit one of the crime scenes … they may have stumbled upon the key to solving this case.

Listen to the first-ever in-depth coverage of Darnell Smith's case only on The Deck.

  • Jerene Matta (Queen of Spades, Washington)
    Oct 8 2025

Our card this week is Jerene Matta, the Queen of Spades from Washington.

During the Yakima Police Department’s annual Christmas party, the news of 62-year-old Jerene’s murder shocked every officer and their plus ones. Jerene’s house was known for its security cameras – there were so many that you basically couldn’t enter the property without being filmed.

Why was Jerene targeted? And who was she watching on her cameras?

Or maybe the better question is, was someone watching Jerene?

    • If you have information regarding the murder of Jerene Matta, you can call the Yakima Police Department at 509-575-6200. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can leave a tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477. You can also call Detective Shaw directly at 509-576-6791.

Loving this so far. Honestly anything involving Ashley or Brit I’m on board! And can’t wait to see if anything gets to help solves these cold cases from listeners !

So happy

I have high expectations of Ashley because I believe she is a trailblazer. Her stories, narration, and research are excellent. She tends to have trivial things that really ruin the podcast (not just this one. It's part of the trademark, I suppose! 😂)
The ads and their placement really ticks me off, especially because we don't have the option to subscribe and pay for ad-free content. Also, the intro at the beginning of each episode is unnecessary, and half a minute of theme music is just obnoxiously unnecessary! It's not even good music! Of the hundreds of podcasts I've listened to, only ONE had a stunning intro/theme song. It's the Culpable podcast, and the theme song is by the Dirt Poor Robins. You can find it on YouTube. If yours is not of that caliber, half a minute is far, far too long.

Good, but Could be Better

I personally love all of their content, excited to see where this podcast takes us! big fan of bringing awareness to cold cases / missing people and at the very least letting their families know their loved ones have not just been lost in a stack of cases.
Stay safe!!

Ashley I can't thank you enough for covering Su's murder. I grew up in Saugus so I remember this vividly and I also happen to know Marlene personally. every single thing the detective said about her is 100% the truth. Marlene is one of the nicest sweetest strongest women I have ever met in my life. I hope that this gets off someday because Marlene really does deserve answers as well as Su deserves Justice.

I stumbled across "The Deck" after I hade binged every episode of "Crime Junkie" and was in desperate need of my true crime fix. This has it all! The narrater keeps your attention and has a way of telling these extreamly intimate grusome events while being completly respectful of the victums memory and surviving family and friends privacy/feelings. Someone needs to tell these stories and she has been anointed to be that person.

Extraordinary
