In Ep. 59: "Boring-Ass Racist White Church," we’re joined by actor, writer, and podcast host LaNisa Renee Frederick for a bold and unfiltered conversation about her upbringing in the Worldwide Church of God—a high-control religious movement masquerading as Christianity. LaNisa shares what it was like growing up in what she unapologetically calls a “boring-ass racist white church,” and how those experiences shaped her identity, her faith, and her voice as a creator.

We also talk about her latest project, Black & CULTivated—a podcast centering the stories of Black and Brown cult survivors, bringing much-needed representation to the conversation around spiritual abuse and religious trauma. With honesty, humor, and sharp insight, LaNisa breaks down the intersections of race, control, and healing.

The Gravity of a “Modern” Cult

Content: The prerogative of a man with narcissistic tendencies and a serious God Complex: salvation for the elect and multiple deaths for the worldly. Found this podcast while looking for new cult audiobooks. Usually I don’t listen to podcasts on audible, but I’m so glad I took the leap of faith. This is a raw and deeply personal account of the Lasiter family members as they try to expound on what life was like under their father’s regime of control, and life after their religious, social, and familial selves fall away from it. I look forward to future episodes with anxious excitement. A mixture of wanting to know more while being so disturbed by the reality that “Crusade Church” is a very real and active “Google-able” church.

Quality: the audio is fantastic quality. I listen to everything on 1.5x typically. But had to tone it down to 1.4x for the speed of the speakers. When the discussion gets to a particularly excited level, it may be necessary to slow it down in order to not miss anything.
