The first week of December marks the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and December 5th is a huge day in the history for the Ben Moore Hotel and the Civil Rights Movement.
On the morning of Dec. 5, 1955, Dr. King was voted to his first leadership position. Later that evening, Dr. King was on the 4th floor of the Ben Moore hotel speaking to a group of young people. Dr. King would leave the Ben Moore Hotel and travel to Holt Street Baptist church, where over 5,000 people waited to hear him speak for the very first time as leader of the modern civil rights movement.
he Conservation Fund will be protecting the Ben Moore Hotel — once known as a “headquarters for power” in the Black community and a stop for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and even musical icons like B.B. King and Little Richard.
