  • Our Writer in Residence Finishes His First Draft
    Aug 14 2025
    J. Ryan Stradal is our Writer in Residence, if you have been following along. What does that mean? Well, we have been with him from step one since he started his fourth novel, as yet unnamed. A deeply personal novel that imagines the third act his mother might have lived if she had progressed past the age of 55. She was J.’s person, his guiding light and his North Star. He has now finished his first draft and we talk to him as he tackles notes and thinks about bringing the novel to market. Also joining us is Jonah Zimiles, one of our all-time favorite booksellers with his mission based independent bookstore, Words in Maplewood. Join us for a great show with old friends. • Classics Series: Invisible Man
    Aug 7 2025
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is a feverishly paced, lyrical portrait of an unnamed African American man in the 1930’s. Hauntingly beautiful and raw, this book changed how Americans think about race. Immediately popular and the winner of the National Book Award in 1953, Ralph Ellison’s classic does not fit neatly in any literature genre (is it satire? Is it fiction? Is it historical fiction?). We sit down with two professors from Ellison’s alma mater, Tuskegee University, Dr. Zanice Bond and Dr. Caroline Gebhard to discuss Ellison’s legacy, and the legacy of his most famous work. Join us. One of my favorite authors and I adore the Thursday Murder Club series. Kate, you nearly lost me with your suggestion of Tom Cruise for the movie version. Uncharacteristically wrong. Check out the Facebook groups which are casting the movie!

Podcast is almost better than the books!

Kate & Charlie Gibson talk about books and interview a wide range of authors, many you’ll know, several you’ll be thrilled to learn about. So fun and informative. Recently they visited the Library of Congress and that was a fascinating listen. You know Charlie from Good Morning America (etc) and you’ll be delighted by his daughter Kate who is whip smart and funny.

Book lovers will love this, and less avid readers will be motivated to pick up a book

I can't say enough good things about this podcast - it's interesting and helpful and insightful. Kate and Charlie ask for suggestions for how to make the podcast better, and I wouldn't change a thing! I've recommended it quite a few times, but always with the warning - don't listen unless you want to greatly expand your "want to read" list! I never would have found "This is Happiness" without Kate and Charlie, and it was my favorite book (of the 60) that I read last year. I recommended the book to one of my book clubs (yes I'm in 2), and never has a book been more universally loved. Thank you for expanding MY reading horizons! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for all that you do to make this podcast happen!
