On September 16th of 1994, more than sixty schoolchildren witnessed something extraordinary during their morning recess. They described seeing a disc-shaped object land in a patch of bush near the schoolyard. Even more astonishing, many of them said small beings with large, black, oval-shaped eyes appeared beside the craft. The children reported that these figures did not speak but seemed to communicate directly into their minds, showing them visions of environmental destruction and warnings about the dangers of technology.

In addition to his many military deployments, Colonel Blitch’s field experience includes a multitude of disaster response activities—most notably in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing (1995), World Trade Center attacks (2001), and Hurricane Katrina (2005). Holding a doctorate and multiple master's degrees in cognitive science and engineering, he has taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy and led pioneering research programs in robotics and human-machine teaming.

Dr. Blitch’s work has taken him from war zones and classified laboratories to rubble piles, ski slopes, and mysterious mountain bike trails. Along his journey, he has accumulated a wealth of personal and professional experience that has compelled him to confront uncomfortable truths about artificial intelligence, hidden trauma, and institutional silence. This episode examines one of Australia’s most enduring aviation mysteries. On October 21, 1978, twenty-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich departed Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne on what should have been a routine flight to King Island.

Flying a Cessna 182L across the Bass Strait, he expected an uneventful journey of just over 120 miles. Instead, he vanished. Despite an intensive week-long search covering more than a thousand square miles of sea and coastline, no wreckage or trace of the young pilot was ever found.

Valentich was ambitious and deeply committed to flying, having logged 150 hours in the air and aiming to build a professional career in aviation. The Bass Strait was known for its unpredictable waters and history of disappearances, but the conditions that evening were favorable, making his disappearance even more perplexing.

The mystery deepens when we revisit Valentich’s final moments in the air. According to official records, he reported observing a large, metallic object with bright green lights that hovered and darted in ways no known aircraft could. He described it circling his plane and playing what seemed like a terrifying game. Then came an eerie metallic noise, and silence.

Witnesses across Victoria and Tasmania also reported strange lights and objects in the sky that night. From Cape Otway to King Island, independent observers described green glows, metallic craft, and lights descending toward the sea.
