Southwest Michigan is rich in history, as the region contains the second wave of twelve counties organized in the State in 1829. The stories encapsulate pioneer triumphs and tragedy, amazing events and resilient, enterprising and passionate people. The region developed along the Territorial Roads, connecting the first land routes between Detroit and Chicago, which later brought with it the railroads and modern highways. Starting from the Battle Creek regional area, and branching out from there, join me as I explore forgotten tales of Southwest Michigan’s past.Michael Delaware Mundial

  • S4 E35: Sarah Haviland: The Sinister Plan Unfolds
    Aug 31 2025

This is part 2 of the three part story on Sarah Haviland, a woman who murdered her three children in 1865 in Battle Creek, Michigan.

In this episode, I cover her sinister plan that she created with Dr. Daniel Baker, and how it unfolded, resulting in the death of three children. Her plans were foiled by the innocence of one of her surviving daughters, Phoebe.

Sarah Haviland and Daniel Baker are charged and convicted on three counts of murder in 1866.

  • S4 E33 - General Tom Thumb in Michigan
    Aug 17 2025

Charles Sherwood Stratton AKA 'General Tom Thumb' had a condition known as pituitary dwarfism, and only grew to 2 feet, 10 inches tall in his life.

He worked for years with showman P.T. Barnum, and in 1852 toured through southern Michigan, stopping in several southwest michigan towns.

His 1863 wedding to a woman his same height was a national sensation, and for nearly 150+ years later it has inspired reinactments of the event for everything from charity fundraisers to graduation ceremonies. These events were very popular in Michigan in the 1890's, but had been continued on to as recent as 2005.
