The Old Bat was a crack shot. There had been a murder of crows cawing up the back of the paddock for a few days now.

The new shoots of grass had drawn the wildlife to the edge of the road, where the cars and trucks had finished them off.

An ice-cream container, filled to the brim with water had been gingerly and very carefully carried across from the tap to the new pen. Grubby hands had eagerly spread the chook pellets to help them feel at home, the chickens settled in to stay and so, therefore, they needed names...
